Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU)

This is a pic of my take on the Knights excellent idea, I added a few small conformal RCS tanks and a single spot light from B9 and a few more RCS ports but essentially its his work. Knight take a standing ovation for this. I openly challenge the Devs to make use of this piece of kit. There is only one concern I have about it though, Kerbals fall out of the seat a little too easily.

Yep, the do indeed. Dockings are "interesting". I still built myself a version of this as soon as I saw it:

The only non-stock part is a KAS winch (just in case there's no docking port on the target), but it is a complete re-imagining of the idea. Just about 15 parts, I love it, and it owes everything to this thread. It has become standard equipment on Bat'leth Shuttlecrafts, and the kerbals love it, poor them:

This kinda reminds me of the whole moon bike idea that I recall floating around. I Actually built a few myself even before seats were added. So much fun floating around at relatively high speeds on a little RCS hoverbike... the hills were my favorite part, since I never managed to install wheels... Could have made a montage of kerbals tumbling up slopes.

Assembled and ready for testing by Spazzy Spaceworks. It is definitely a sound design, on paper at least. It is just a matter of making sure the measurements are correct. I do see potential for this as for one additional use: escape pod. For now, just add one Mk 1 parachute. When the atmosphere decides it needs to eat craft going in too steep or too fast, provide additional outer shell that it can dock to in a pinch for re-entry. We have the parts and the technology. We can build it.

I even see adapter modules being no difficulty, for if you need a larger port to attach to a satellite or wayward orbital module. Just keep an eye on your rcs supply, as the more weight means more fuel needed.

This...is a craft that SQUAD needs to add into the stock game....WAY TOO USEFUL! =D MOAR! (Sent up a couple dozen to use on stations, and altered one with a slightly more powerful RCS [modded] for use on moons)

They already did. They just provided the parts for us to assemble. That's rather the core point of the game.

It's because nobody's ever really thought of it before.

*Very,very,very slow clap*

I guess people don't pay much attention to spaceport, there are some really great addons and crafts that don't get noticed because they're not on the forums ;.;.

They should post them to the forum as well. Then they would get lots of attention.

I go through the spaceport a lot and yes there is some good stuff there but there is also a lot of crap.

No, I really don't pay attention to Spaceport, maybe I should.

Unfortunately this is all true :(

Hey! You can't fool me! That last photo in the OP isn't from the game! Nice try buster.

*dies of hysterical laughter*

PLEASE tell me that was a joke

I would say that those who submit to Spaceport follow up with a post in the spacecraft exchange of the forum, and provide a link to the Spaceport submission. More exposure for the maker is a good thing.

I didn't see the RTG, and I didn't strip it down to have a look and see how it was build, I only added to it, now I have strip it down, I have modify it a bit, to suit my needs, and I am looking at a way to fix a arm to it

I found that top/bottom, or middle on the sides, in order to keep CoM kinda centered. You could just put it on the bottom or top though.

  • 2 months later...

Noted, and thanks. I'm curious enough to build and test one.

One question though - why the large OKTO? I would think the small/short one would suffice.

Edit - Ah, did not realize the 'small' OCTO was also smaller in D/W as well - making it impossible to attach to Clamp Jr. D'oh. I did come up with something that makes the little one work, but it looks nothing like a 'normal' MMU.

:D

This is the one I made. I remember seeing the thread with no craft file so I made my own also.

My Kerbals are a little more `the wild one` than `ripley` so I gave them a couple of ants and an oscar as well.

So sorry about the wall of images, Sky has blocked Imgur...

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
