BOEING 747 [Flyable] [Performance Flight Tested and Refined]

Recommended Posts

UPDATE: A re-mastered version of this craft is released to celebrate the first anniversary of the program,

Check it out here! http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/threads/93674-BOEING-747-400-365-Passenger-Capacity

GayInHr.jpg

I have seen some B747 posts but most are poorly built and some don't even resemble one at all.

So I decided to ditch over 20+ hours to make a look alike one.

Three Quarter Around The World Test Flight

A final test run before the release ;)

Also, the plane is able to take off and fly with only 2 Engines in case you smashed the other two.

Action groups:

[1] Toggle Engines

[2] Shutdown Outer Engines

[3] Shutdown Inner Engines

[7] Toggle Cabin Lights (Commercial Version only)

[8] Toggle Landing Lights

[9] Toggle Aircraft Exterior Ladders

[0] Toggle Cabin Mobility Ladders

Precautions:

> The outer engines are very prone to smashing the ground during landing and can be prevented by descending slowly.

> EVA ONLY when the plane is FULLY STOPPED to prevent explosions.

Javascript is disabled. View full album

Downloads: If you are taking it for a spin then get the original one, there are some lag issues for the commercial ones due to the increase in part count.

Boeing 747- Original (Empty interior with no seats)

Boeing 747- Commercial Version (73 seats + 3 cockpit crew)

Any problems, just notify me and I will look in for a solution, Thanks.

Have fun! :D

[Additional Notes]

Further tests reveals that the plane depends on the thrust of the engine to keep it's nose up. Low thrust may result in the inability for the plane to nose up.

any chance of a hot stewardess on this flight?

Well, KSP haven't introduce female astronauts yet :D

So kerbal of them to sit on the fuel tanks. :sticktongue:

EDIT: There is only one runway, specifying "left" is unnecessary.

Yeah, they also tend to get stuck in between the fuel tanks when I move that to the backseats so I had to seat them through the roof :P

Seeing this gave me the idea of providing 'passenger' capability on my 747-Heavy Lifter that I used for testing the Glider Capabilities of my STS Orbital Vehicle...

Can't really carry as many as yours can (only 24 Kerbals + 3 Man Flight Crew) not really cruise are high or fast as yours does, as it really tops out around 12-3km @ 350m/s (780mph) but still it's not suppose to go Super-Sonic anyway ^_^ so really going that fast is an achievement; esp. when you consider it's nearly 60tn at Launch.

Still was pretty fun to convert it, here's a picture of it and the .craft if you want to check it out.

Think it could still use some improvements, perhaps some better Lift / Glide capabilities for example, as without engines it pretty much will just nose-dive to oblivion; plus landing can be well "interesting" if you're not careful with the brakes. (made that mistake the first time I test flew it to one of the poles to see what range it would have)

Still you can pretty much point it where you want, stick on SAS then leave it to it for the next hour or so until you reach where you need to.

Out of curiosity, what is the mass of this thing, also, I don't think it is quite big enough, considering that a 1-class 747-400 can hold 660 human passengers, and that it has nearly 1200 kN of thrust and flies at mach 0.85. Also, they are 70 meters long, which is of course equivalent to 28 pancake tanks sitting on the ground lined up side-by-side.

Still, very cool plane, I'm quite jealous of that fact that it can hold so many people, think of what a space-plane that could do that would be like! You could crew several large space-stations in a single launch of a relatively small craft.

The actual 747-SP/HL (which the one I made is based upon) actually has roughly 880kN Thrust / 450-passenger Capability for up to 9,300 KM (roughly half the Circumference of the Earth) and tend to weigh roughly 325 Metric Tonnes on Take-Off with the dimensions of 6.5m x 8m x 56m (roughly)

In comparison the one above features, 460kN Thrust / 24-Passenger, for roughly 350 KM (half the Circumference of Kerbin) and weights approx. 60 Metric Tonnes on Take-Off with the Dimensions of 3.0m x 4.0m x 35m (approx.) really on of the biggest discrepancies comes from the Weight/Passenger/Count (and technically Lift Ratio, but Kerbal Aerodynamics is a special snowflake ^_^)

This said, while remaking aircraft in Kerbal is fun trying to get realistic proportions and such... I've found that the SPH/VAB isn't designed for anything with real-life dimensions but rather the scaled world that the Kerbals actually live in. Particularly given that if they were real, they would be considered dwarf people as they're only like 3ft Tall. So making things roughly Half-Scale actually works out to be almost right within their world.

Mine flew faster and higher because it uses Turbojets which produce more thrust at high altitudes compared to the basic jet engines. If I used Basic jet engines my ceiling would be around 15km.

Also the air is thinner higher up, allowing planes to reach insane speeds ;)

Btw, your tail gear is preventing your plane from lifting off...
