How much torque could a little SAS torque?

Hi everyone,

I am building "my" version of an extremely famous sci-fi ship using stock parts. My question today is if I stack Inline Advanced Stabilizers, or Inline Reaction Wheels, will the torque be additive?

Bonus add-on question: is it relevant how these units are oriented, since they're advertised to provide torque in all 3 axes? (I guess perhaps stacking is possibly irrelevant as well .. I mean .. you could have one here, one there, and the two configurations would make no difference?)

Putting more reaction wheel parts on a vessel does add more torque. The orientation is irrelevant, as far as I'm aware. But you should be carefull where/how you stack them, because the parts generate torque on themselves, which then propagates by regular physics. I had a rocket which broke apart during launch because I hid two SAS-Modules inside an interstage and those connections were too weak for that much torque.

Although i do not know if the relation is indeed linear, between the number of inline stabilizers and the torque, the effect is additive. The orientation of units is irrelevant, however, their position is. Imagine that where you place your module the torque is applied at that place. This in turn means that if the module is very far from the center of mass (which is usually the center of your ship) your ship will spin around another point possibly interfering with docking manuevers (or other manuevers that i can't think of right now :P )

Thanks so much for the info guys. If I am hearing you correctly, --> spread 'em out. Yeah lockpicker you reminded me of a something that happened recently where I had one wheel, and some parts of the ship jerked although eventually complying with the initial command. Good points - thanks! She may not look like much ~
