Space Cowboy's Millenium Falcon

Huge disclaimer - this is in NO WAY an attempt to steal the wind from any other Falcon project. In fact, as things are looking, mine will likely never make it out of the hanger. She tears herself apart right after I instantiate her at the spaceport. In any case, as with many people I am sure, this is one of many long standing back burner projects I have had on my mind since the beginning. Right now, this is ONLY something to look and and speculate about. I am making no claims as to her future air or space-worthiness. What is seen should be considered a rough sketch as well. I have no curvature in the saucer for example, and the freight mandibles are out of proportion, to name a couple I am aware of at the moment. I stole some of the chassis construction concepts directly from Exothermos's design. Thank you Exothermos and credit to you as appropriate.

The 3 framework sections in the rear serve no purpose whatsoever at the moment.

You're absolutely right. At the moment I am still in the crazy stage, where one is actually looking fwd to the challenge. I am sure that will change. I may resort to CFG editing. If I have to add one big piece of lead out there on the left, with X amount of drag, so be it. Purists be darned. I may also require the infinite fuel cheat. Time will tell. The Falcon must be allowed to spread her wings and fly.

A few more for today - mandibles shortened, details added, all sketch stage of course.

Anyone listening - made some significant progress on the troublesome dish. If I run straps all around the edge, holding each slice to the next, Kerbal never goes crazy. Also, I am slowly coming up with a good "apparent" curvature to the top and bottom saucer - I am really encouraged by how it's looking. I made it in the VAB, for 8x symmetry, and successfully copied the CRAFT to the SPH folder, and changed VAB to SPH in the CRAFT itself. That all worked like a charm. The problem I am running into, is some of the panels need to be removed, around the side tubes of the Falcon. Since I hade 8 way symmetry activated during construction, I can't remove what I want without removing other ones. So I believe I will rebuild the entire dish in the VAB, and when it comes to that area, I will address it at that time.

As is obvious, there is a single piece that has been rotated and duplicated to create the illusion of a dish. At this time, there are two angles in it:

I am trying to keep parts count down. I originally built the dish by rotating a section made only with 1x1 panels. The parts count was so high my 4 core was rendering at 1 frame per second.

Status: control is not oriented correctly, parts count is too high for practical use (have not tried with all settings turned down however), otherwise decent progress today.

Pretty sure it's not gonna fly except perhaps very hi end systems. Very very laggy at this point. I can't reduce the parts count in the saucer section without a big hit on believability. I still need to add a lot of parts to close it in, add engines and control. I will finish it though.

P.S. I take it back I think it will run on 8 core systems with good graphics or 4 core with great graphics. I just started a new game and copied it over, and there is some debris in my other game I can't get rid of, that was affecting frame rate. I am getting maybe 4 or 5 FPS right now on a clean game with it on the pad!

984 parts with just installed engines. Still needs many SAS units for torque based control, and quite a few more metal panels.

Total rebuild required. My control is off axis and I can't seem to rectify, I will be fixing the balance issue by altering the core of the lateral tube from left to right, I will utilize the COM ball during that, and also since a final version is possibly imminent, I will also line all elements up perfectly on this one. I have flown this off the pad vertically a few times, testing another balance option (that I will not use) and discovered she is still underpowered. Probably going to load her with Skippers and Mainsails.

Cool! This is looking pretty accurate, you are a good modeler. That part count problem is always a bummer. If you want to fly it, maybe sacrifice that cool dish a little. That's gotta be near 500 parts for the top and bottom. That might be a good compromise. I remember playing x-wing back in the day and I loved looking at the falcon in that game. It was probably under 200 polygons! XD. I'm sure people would forgive a little accuracy-for-playability trade off.

I am gonna spend some time experimenting with new dish configurations. I am also gonna get rid of most of the fuel, in a way similar to what you're suggesting. Most or all my torque generators will take the place of the lateral tanks.

Thank you for the excellent reference, and I may use it for a future project. I have become a stock Kerbal monk or whatever, for the time being.

In other news - there is NO WAY to reduce the parts count in the domes. Not at this size of a model. I am gonna forge onward, in defiant blindness.

Ok I balanced it left to right. I hope all the torque generators on the right won't cause a control problem.

Today's final update - rebuilt dome - same as before - cannot reduce parts - this time all construction is in the SPH. I worked at the side tubes, and the angled metal, and how it protrudes out of the domes. Had to link the angled metal somewhere else - to utilize symmetry - since the lateral tubes are not built with symmetry.

What are your specs?

I have a high end system I am playing KSP on and I can get a high particle count running, I could try to fly it for you and record a video. Also 0.22 is apparently helping with high part count models with optimizations, maybe wait till then and try again?
