Mun base problems

Recommended Posts

Hey guys I have not rouble getting to the mun and landing my mun base its just that the bases land far apart from each other. Plus the rovers I use to transport the kerbals always end up flipping or break even when I try to put everything close to the ground so it won't flip or break it does meaning its a very long walk/jetpack ride for the kerbals. So what I'm asking is how do you get them to land close to each other without making a mobile base which I currently suck at by the many many dead kerbals on the mun.

I usually do it like this:

make an orbit that is very close to mun (less than 10km), and going above the target.

make one navigation node that roughly kills most of your orbit velocity, and would land a little behind the target.

when you reach this point, start retrograde, pointing slightly upwards, so you dont let your spacecraft fall too fast towards the ground. that way you have time to switch to map view and check the prediction where your ship will land, and you can turn off the nav node too.

kill your orbit velocity before you kill your falling velocity/reach the ground.

Optionally, if something is wrong, kill your falling velocity at about 1km above ground, so you have time to think through, and make the corrections.

edit: oh and, this method requires a pretty good thrust, so you can kill your orbit fast, so you can start the retrograde close to the target: it is easier to stop at the right place this way.

Before I put a base on the Mun, I practiced my landings with a small craft trying to put it down next to a flag or craft that was already on the surface. My first attempts put me several kilometres away from my target, but slowly I got better until the distance could be measured in metres rather than km. At that point I felt comfortable in sending up the parts for my base, and it all went swimmingly, with no long hikes/drives to get the parts in the same place.
