License questions

DSSP

Recommended Posts

hi i'v been coding for a long time now but nevver really released any sourcecodes and therefore nevver used/created a license.

so i have some questions about license creation.

would it be allowed to just write a license saying anything the user can think of is forbidden with the exception of using the files in ksp.

or is that to easy?

is it more complicated then that?

thanks for any help.

Well you can write what ever license you want, but good luck trying to enforce it.

You will need to be much more specific. If you release source code, you pretty much make it impossible for anyone to not to take a peek and alter/tinker at will.

Take a look at the Creative Commons License. You might find this useful.

Yes you can. A simple "All rights reserved" will be okay, as stated in this licensing guide. But please also think about adding an abandonment clause. All rights reserved is fine as long as you are active and people can simply ask you for whatever they want and you can respond how ever you like. But once your are gone for whatever reason (moved on, real live issues, etc), an "all rights reserved" is very bad for players who use their mods. For example they are pwned on the next KSP update that will most likely break compatibility and they have to abandon their savegame.

I know its hard to think about what will happen once you are gone and thats most likely the reason even guys like the one who wrote those licensing guide did not. But it would be good for the community and KSP.

*edit* lol, no response for nearly an hour and now 3 at the same time^^

Simply copy the license of your favourite game or OS. Oh wait... wouldn't that be forbidden... which is exactly why you should reconsider using such a restrictive license ;)

aren't most of the licenses just fictive ?

i mean who's gonna enforce them at all ?

are there any law firms behind public licenses to enforce them?

if i would write my own license statement who would enforce it ?

You have to "enforce" any license for your products. No one has to do it or will do it for you in most cases. Ofc other people might respect your license without being sued. For example moderators on this forum might delete stuff, if someone is sharing a modified version for your mod here while your license prohibits it. But if they are not, you or a lawyer you hire has to make them respect your license. In the worst case a court has to decide, but talking about that is way beyond my expertise.

If your truly concerned about someone steeling your stuff don't post it.

But with that being said, everyone here does an awesome job of respecting each others work. Also a lot of people here are new and just learning. If you have a lot of experience, it is an opportunity to help others learn. Think of it as you would be donating your code to educate the less experienced.
