Promotion to orange suit

Is it possible to make any of your pilots besides the original trio wear an orange space suit? I'm willing to edit the save file if that's what it takes.

No but it would be cool if the suit colors were like a badge of rank they could earn

There is no way ingame. I believe it's impossible even with save editing, i.e. the suit is loaded as orange if the name is Jebediah Kerman, Bill Kerman, or Bob Kerman.

You could look into the Universe Replacer mod and the resources people have made for it; I know it has facilities for reskinning spacesuits as well as pretty much everything else in the game, otherwise I wouldn't know how to do it.

Only problem is that the suit colours assigned by the mod are totally random. The mod author himself has stated that he can't find a way around that.

Totally random out of the selection of textures you use... so if you want all your guys to have orange suits, then just install only an orange suit texture.
