Changing vessel name (type) without electrical charge

Recommended Posts

So I recently ran into this problem:

I was landing a rover on the mun.. somehow I had waaay to much fuel left, so I decided to land the hole transfer stage, separate the actual landing stage and then land that somewhere else.

The transfer stage is now pretty much debris. Since it does not have its own power supply, it doesn't have any electrical charge left. Now I can't change the type of it to debris and call it anything different than "-insert vessel name here- probe". Btw the transfer stage does have its own probe core.

I want to be able to change the name and vessel type regardless of the electrical charge of the vessel. Also I want to be able to do exactly that from the tracking station.

I mean, if I were to give my TV a name, it wouldn't have to be on for me to do that, would it?

I've run into this as well. Very frustrating little quirk! Otherwise spent stages you intend for a graveyard orbit are impossible to class as debris if they have no power. A quick save file edit can fix, but still annoying.

Allowing us to rename/reclass objects from the tracking station would be outstanding, since I tend to forget to do so while in the middle of separating things and maneuvering. Before you know it, you have half a dozen "xxx probes" you need to load back into scene one at a time just to change the text and icon.

The way I interpret it, KSP encourages you to terminate unused "debris" rather than throw them in a graveyard orbit, because they'll be clogging up memory otherwise. Not realistic, but it's the realities of a computer program.

Having more control from the tracking station is I think a suggested (and planned?) feature already.
