Time to take out the trash

Recommended Posts

So, I just got finishing my second Mun base, and I have have ended up with a rather sizeable rubbish heap.

Soo, I need to clear up this heap of crud to A) get the physics load down in that area and B) get that nasty eyesore away from the Armstrong Memorial. Now what I've thinking is some kind of dump truck or scoop made from the structural panels, scoop it up in one go and take it 2.5km away or launch it up fast enough to be totally destroyed when it comes back down.

Now, before I start building, does anyone have a better idea and can anyone advise on what the physics consequence of scooping up and carrying a heap like that, what I really need to know is would I be looking at crash city attempting that? I don't wana send a giant scooper all that way if it's a guaranteed kraken-fest.

My only alternate idea so far is a rocket with loads of KAS grapples and flying off like a wedding car dragging cans.

I know I could just delete it all from the tracking centre, but that's cheating.

There's always the "Terminate Flight" in the tracking station. Not quite the most realistic method, but it definitely can remove the trash. Just make sure you are terminating the right items or you'll be kicking yourself! Quicksaves!!!

I figure the easiest way to go about it would be to "fling" the objects high enough so they crash back into the Mun and obliterate. maybe make a small rocket with a KAS attachment, and do a small launch and let it go at whatever height smashes things. and of course brake yourself on the way back down.

Also, maybe send a rocket at a high speed at it and the explosion will send everything flying.

I like your truck idea, I think it is what I'd do in your situation, although considering the great size and awkward center of mass the payload would probably have, it might take some hard work to get it there in one piece. You seem to have KSP well in hand though, so why not. Personally for the sake of space hygiene I always try to leave enough fuel and electrical power in skycranes and other temporary thrusting stages that they can be shot off into the ground elsewhere and totally destroyed, or put out of the way.

I like the lazor or engine incineration idea, but I'm wondering if I blow up one of the tanks with the orange radial engines, will they be destroyed too or fly off all over the place?

In my other base i flew the skycranes away but the nature of the base in this meant the landing system was a bit more complex with bits on the bottom and top which had to taken apart one at a time, and I decided to drain all the spare fuel to use for fueling landers in future. probably a bad idea in hindsight,

It just flashed me: circular flamethrower aka Jebediah's-ring-of-fire.

several mainsails facing inward and heavily strutted to the supporting structure...

whatever you're trying (please try the Jrof!!!) hit F1 as often as possible, can't wait for your solution

as I had another look at your pic: the rubble looks mostly intact. can't you just dock a probecore, refuel and launch to oblivion? the probe could also be KASed on, so you only need one "waste disposal"-lander (with multiple ports, cores etc) to do it.

I have a pickup truck rover that I use for things like this. On the Mun I have cranes that can lower debris into the bed, on Laythe I have to use the KAS winch mounted in the bed to pull the debris aboard. It works out pretty good, but my trash dump is about 7 km from my main base, if it is just 2.5 km away approaching or departing ships will often be in render distance of both my base and the trash heap.

I tried a test of that idea... it had mixed results...

on the one hand, it destroyed the test junk, one the other hand, it created new junk...

next thing I'll try is orbital bombardment, I have a bunch of obsolete tugs I need to dispose of anyway.. maybe I can kill two space junks with one space stone.
