43rd anniversary of Apollo 8

It\'s been 43 years to the day since Apollo 8 launched, in my opinion the most important space mission in history, as it was the first time humans had ever left earth orbit. Apollo 11 may have accomplished the goal of landing on the moon, but Apollo 8 formed probably the biggest step towards doing so.

Technically they were in Earth orbit throughout the entire mission, the keyword is probably low earth orbit. Or beyond its radiation belts.

Nonetheless reading this has reminded me once again of the irksome fact(for me anyway) that it\'s been nearly 40 years since we last ventured beyond LEO.

The fact that we are human didn\'t stop us from managing not to spend enough money on stupid wars to rule out sending people to the Moon. It\'s not likely to happen again at this point, no, but to say that we /can\'t/ purely because we are human beings comes off as rather daft to me, considering that it was humans who designed, built, and flew Apollo, and helped create the conditions that made it possible for the thing to become a reality in the first place.
