In all the hype surrounding the movie Gravity, which on a personal note I think is being overhyped, I think a lot of people are missing this:

I've seen it and holy -mushrooms-!! I thought is was, really, really, really good. The trailer might not suggest it but the actors are doing a stellar job of portraying the reality of deep space travel. And its just brilliantly filmed and executed on a high level of realism. Although this doesn't avoid some little movie cliche's, but then again which movie does, its just a great spacefilm. I liked it better then 2001 ans Sunshine.

I would love to see a modder take some inspiration from this regarding the ship interiors and perhaps EVA activities etc.

I would highly recommend it to any spacefreak, its a thrilling movie. Also, if you do wanna watch it, I would avoid watching any further trailers or featurettes besides this one because some tend to spoil a lot.

I enjoyed Europa report until it turned into yet another monster flick. It would've been much better if they sticked to the human elements.

Well that's the thing I actually enjoyed the most. See they don't really reveal anything untill the very end, and when they do its still, in my opinion at least, somewhat grounded in reality. What I don't like however if is a realistic space movie confronts you with a sunburned zombie in the third act without ever explaining why...

Yea, sunshine's 3th act was pretty bad as well.

Anyway, the reason I don't like the monster is exactly that they don't reveal much. It's just there and tries to kill them because the plot demands it, no motivations are given. If they needed to go through a psychological trauma on Europa's surface it would've been much more interesting to just have their engines fail or something and see how they break down. The monster is unimaginative, unrealistic and worst of all unneeded in my opinion.

Well maybe we just have diffrent opinions then because I like the fact that there is a lot room for imagination. Instead of giving you a hollywood style green men who come from a mothership, one could ask if this is a really intellegent creature that knew what was going on the entire time. That knew that another species had landed on their planet, that knew that they couldn't be discovered. Or is is just a killer which is thirsty for blood. If you choose for one or the other you can get conflict and plotholes, instead its mysterious and creepy. And that's exactly how an encounter should be.

I really enjoyed it until, like Rlathon, the monster at the end. I mean...it wasnt the worst thing but i thought it was very unimaginative. All those random radiation spikes and waht not and it turns out just to be some lifeform that hunts things on the surface...There must be alot going on, on the surface if this creature likes to hang around near it and start hunting landing craft.

Also, no one was left on the orbiter? or is my memory causing me issues and the whole ship went to land? I cant remember now. I seem to recall a reason no one stayed but cant quite remember!.

HOWEVER! Im not one to forget the good bits and my favourite bit was the view of jupiter from the surface of the moon. I know we were all sitting there telling that woman to get a move on astop looking at jupiter...but i would have done the same. Not every day you get to see it like that.

At first i was hesitant of the style in which it was filmed but after 20minutes or so it really seemed to fit the film!

Conclusion:would watch again.

Sunshine was another massive dissapointment! It was really enjoyable up to the point it stopped being a sci fi film about getting to the sun and it turned it to a terrible space horror film...What a let down :(

Europa Report is quite realistic, but has an incredibly pathetic and weak character development. I could care less about bags of potatoes than the characters. It's not a good film. Movies are supposed do be art. Europa Report is more like a hyped mockumentary.

Don't get me wrong, I liked it, but it's not a great movie at all.

Hmm, again I have to disagree. The actors just really convincingly potrayed a group of astronauts on a mission in my opinion. I thought there was a descent balance between drama, and profesionalism. Yes the characters don't have lot of background but they're not a bunch of stereotyped space cowboys. If someone were to drift away from ISS there would be probably a week of quiet mourning and then on with the mission. Because that is what these people a trained to do.

The thing is that if felt in place. See, a movie like Armageddon, which I also love, if someone dies there it seems more fitting for people to lose their **** for about a minute and then forget about it because its part of the pacing and hollywood action. But this film, like you said, is set up more like a documentary. Which is how I believe you should watch it.

Again you know I don't expect everybody to like this sort of film but I really do. Because it stays in my head for so long, it allows me to project a lot of things without being bothered by to many scientific defects and hollywood action. Not that there's anything wrong with that though.

Well that's basically what I've said. I do like it, but if I view it as a whole product, it lacks character development. That's a huge deal.
