Battlestar Viper Mk II -- VTOL SSTO

So I had seen some posts from people who were making BSG Vipers and I couldn't help myself!

And this is the image it was modeled off of:

kqeJ3Rjl.jpg

I did my best to match the shape with the parts available and this meant going black :D Looks sort of like a stealth Viper, but the only stealth Viper in the series doesn't look anything like the others...

Video

I'm kind of bummed that my mic is starting to die. Oh well, I'm pretty sure my annotations in the beginning help clear things up lol :sticktongue:

If you've only got the time or patience to watch 30 seconds, then click here to see the POV fight scene in the video! Make sure to go HD.

I guess the video is "stock-ish" since I used KerbCam for the camera shots, which is a mod.

UPDATE:

Check out the new and improved, but de-militarized version:

Details

Parts: 129

Engines:

--VTOL: 1 Basic Jet

--Normal: 2 TurboJets, 1 Basic Jet

--Space: 2 LV-909's

Armaments:

--Missiles: 2 Pocket Rockets  (Testing/rename needed!)

--Reloadable

She's capable of doing everything an SSTO should, with the added bonus of being able to blow stuff up! The missiles are designed to look somewhat like the cannons on the original Mk II and they should pack a punch, although you'll need to high tail it out of there if you miss as you only get one shot haha :D

I'll be making a video to help show it off some more here in the future, but in the meantime....

Updated with 2 VTOL engines for better performance!Mediafire

Download this baby and let me know what you think!

UPDATE: Kittyhawk download -- http://www./view/lirgsayms1crzgs/SSI_Kittyhawk.craft

Action groups

1. Toggle LV-909's

2. Toggle TurboJets

3. Toggle VTOL Jets

4. Toggle Basic Jet

5. Docking port: Undock

0. Toggles Air intakes, brakes and lights. Press this before flying!!

VTOL requires full throttle to lift. Make sure you've toggled off the intakes by pressing 0, zero before you fly it around. The TurboJets and Basic Jet are in different groups because that Basic jet is off center from CoM. It won't make you crash though as the SAS modules keep it in line and it makes for a great booster engine for climbing to 18km during ascent.

Enjoy!

I hope someone likes it. Let me know what you think or if there are any changes you'd like to see to it!

So this video I'm working on....good gourd...I'm pretty pumped about it :D

Explosions, POV flying...some of the most fun I've had flying/filming! Hopefully I can edit these clips together somewhat quickly, but the raw footage is pretty sweet.

I love it, getting a new joystick soon as my old one is kaput but even with keyboard she flew well, I havn't got her to space yet though, those rockets are just too fun

I was going to try and set my xbox controller up to see if it was any better than the keyboard, but haven't got around to it yet. I'm not lazy I swearz :D

KSP Physics makes these planes possible!

To true. I love SSTOs and I have since perfected them in FAR+DRE, and I am currently working on perfecting my VTOL SSTO planes, got the Spaceplane Vertical Orbiter or SVO for short, line up and running and the latest model of them is headed to Duna to see if I can complete a personal challenge I set for myself. Go to Duna with a SSTO mine kethane then to Dres, mine Kethane then back to Kerbin.

Granted the SSTO I have headed to Duna has the aerodynamic properties of a shaved brick. Sometimes FARs L/D and other such information just makes me want to cry when I read them for some of my less streamlined craft.

Ya you gotta get to work on dem interplanetary rings before I get there in my tutorial series :D

@Hodo How do you like FAR? What do your SSTO's end up looking like? Long wings, narrow body I assume?

It depends on the job they are designed to do. Most of them the wings are actually pretty much standard sized. Not trying to hijack the thread but here are two that are VERY different but work quite well.

The VSO-3 which has small'ish wings as they aren't the primary lifting surface. It uses mainly brute force to get to space. And it was inspired by the movie "Elysium"

Then there is the SVO-9A which is in route to Duna, but can get to orbit in less than 10 minutes.

The wings aren't huge but it differs from craft to craft. It depends on the speed at which they are planned on being flown at, and what kind of mass I am trying to get to orbit.

thanks to your youtube video for basics of building I think its all possible (didn't know about holding shift to slowly control rotation of parts)

Got designs on paper for both a single shuttle transfer ring sitting at about 20 parts all up and a dual shuttle transfer ring sitting at around 50 parts all up, my usual launch systems with some modification should be able to get 2-3 single rings into orbit at once or 1 dual ring, just need to get back in game so I can work out if I have enough fuel for an aired planet transfer, refuel of shuttle and return to kerbin, this will allow long range shuttle trips to other planets in one hit

working now on the base designs for the airless body shuttle rigs designed to allow a shuttle to dock to the rig and then the rig lands on the airless bodies for you, this will save on weight and parts in the shuttles so they wont have to carry liquid vertical thrusters and fuel to land on those hunks of rock, the rigs will also incorporate a moveable body so essentially you are turning your shuttle into one fat rover :D

Also starting some basic designs for a mutli-use LKO shuttle station aptly named MULKOSS, this station will use special connections to refuel the interplanetary transfer rings and will be the storage station for those rings too keep your LKO nice a clean from clutter. also incorporate a simple refueling system for all shuttle craft, looking to have low part counts, with every part being useful, docking availability for up to 5 shuttles at once (4 rings - 1 dual, 3 single)

This thread is quite old. Please consider starting a new thread rather than reviving this one.
