xbox 360 controller help?

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to setup my x360 controller and I'm not finding ANYTHING useful for help and it isn't working AT ALL. I've searched youtube, google and this forum, everything i've found relates to things i haven't even had the opportunity to try yet. So as i figure it out i will edit this post into a tutorial for posterity-sake.

I plugged in the controller, installed the driver, and cant figure out what to do from there. trying to map it in ksp but absolutely nothing happens. I understand some people use a 3rd-party program to help with this, but others say it isn't necessary, that the controller more or less works (with a few bugs) on its own.

this is also my first time trying to use the controller for a pc game so it's likely my problem is with the device and not the game. could anybody be bothered to write a brief walkthrough for how to get the controller up and running?

update: i following these instructions >>> http://support.xbox.com/en-US/games/pc-games/xbox-controller-for-windows-setup#84e73a6c06984936ac9ffba26abd1ff7

down at step 3 when i run joy.cpl my controller doesn't show up

I assume you have a wired controller? You mentioned plugging it in. I've read people have more trouble getting the wireless controllers to work, because the recharging base it comes with isn't a wireless receiver, you need another bit of hardware for that.

Anyway, here's how you get KSP to work with a properly working controller.

1. From the main menu, go to Settings.

2. At the top of the Settings screen, click Input. You'll see a sub-screen called CONTROL MAPPING.

3. Click on the Staging tab.

4. On the right half of the Staging screen, you'll see an area called Axis Bindings.

5. Click on the button for Pitch Axis and move the left thumbstick up/down. It should assign that axis to pitch. Not sure if pushing up or down first matters, but there's an Invert button if you want it the other way around after testing.

5. Do the same for the Roll and Yaw axes.

6. Use the slider on the right to access the other options.

7. Press Accept and you're ready to test it!

PS if you just want to disable a joystick/controller you only use in other games, you can do so from this same screen. I have to do that with my Sidewinder FF joystick, because it doesn't snap to vertical, and screws up my space/plane flying.
