Dynamic Craft Damage!

Right now Crafts only explode when they suffer a large impact.

My idea is that they could tear and stuff like that.

Example: On re-entry, a command pod rips in two when it hits the ground. Jeb pops, but the halfs survive, meaning that bill and bob are OK.

This would be extremely hard to implement. For one, you would need interior models and textures for things such as engines or fuel tanks if they get split, and it would require a new hitbox for both parts.

As great as this would be to have in game, I think there is a line we have to draw. This is only a game, and it's intentions are to be fun and as detailed as a game can get. But real life is pretty darn complicated. Wouldn't it be awesome if every detail of the game was exactly the same as the way real life worked? Unfortunately today's technology still is not quite good enough to handle simulating real life.

Don't get me wrong, I like the suggestion. I just think its unfortunately a bit out of reach

Instead of let's say soft body physics, what if a part gets hit partily and maybe it would leak, or an Asas would spin out of control or something due to impact

I don't think it has to be very realistic or detailed but I do feel like going from OK > EXPLODED is too abrupt. There should be some intermediate phases like Dented, Sheered and Open.

Or maybe all parts could have the capability to get a "Broken!" status like solar panels, where it's still there but not functioning as it's supposed to (tanks leaking fuel, Reaction wheels losing their precision, etc.).
