Corsair - Hypersonic Jet

Recommended Posts

So, i started doodling with aircraft and after some fine tuning and horrific crashes, i came up with this: The Corsair!

Specifications:

Name: Corsair

Range: 1400 KM during testing.

Weight: 8.66 Tons with payload, 6.42 without.

Max Thrust: 225kN

Max speed: ~1770 m/s / 6370 km/h / Mach 5.2

Minimal speed b/f stall: 20 m/s / 72 km/h

Operational Ceiling: 23,000 meters

I rather enjoy flying the craft, it has great (but sensitive) handling, especially after the drop-tanks have been jettisoned, she's also rather stall and flat-spin resistant.

The .craft: https://mega.co.nz/#!E9dEESgT!RlArBw3iRNW-PMovez2zpUcAjbMITxDNvO6xJkvatok

I apologize for the jerky movement, using a gamepad and i'm used to joystick :P (youtube is still adding sound :s)

Hello!

Very nice plane, although I have something to share with you.

You are way over mach 5. 1700 m/s is mach 5 at sea level. At 22000m, it's a different speed. On earth, Mach 1 is (surprisinly) a lower speed at 22000m (296.4 m/s) than Mach 1 at sea level (340.3 m/s). But the Earth is much bigger than Kerbin, also making the atmosphere of Kerbin smaller than Earth's, making that 22000m out of 69000m (around 31%) of Kerbin's atmosphere is equal to around 37000m on Earth. The speed of sound at that altitude is somewhere between 310 and 313 m/s. 313x5 = 1575 m/s, also known as (according to my calculations) the speed of sound at around 22000m on Kerbin. I'd say you are close to Mach 6 with that plane. If you can adjust it to be able to reach a speed of 1860 m/s at 22000m, you're up at Mach 6.

If you think my calculations are incorrect or want to add something, or just want to give me feedback, I'd appreciate a reply to this post or a PM.

Thanks

-Brix

Indeed, the Corsair F4U was the original inspiration :)

I was actually expecting the original. Threw one together last weekend because I had to go to the Island base for an unknown reason. It's extremely nimble.. IE easy to lose control and fly into the ground when you .... up.. :)

..and yes I am not much of a plane builder :$
