Does this qualify?

With a barely-working MechJeb (this was a very early version of MechJeb 2.0, a month or two before release): SmartASS worked in space but was useless in the atmosphere, kind of thing. Throttle controller was on, since I wrote it for this spacecraft.

56t on liftoff.

One cockpit and three crew containers. Does that fulfill the two-cockpit rule?

Symmetry is unclear. Most planes are asymmetric: there's a vertical stabilizer on top and wheels on the bottom. But you give it 300 points.

If that qualifies, then it's:

+100 (Minute To Win it)

+500 (Hard Mode, if orbiting counts)

+200 (Happy Landings)

+1000 (Outside of Minmus)

+300 (That doesn't look right, if a rover underbelly and extra intakes top-wing count)

Total 2100, or 1800 depending on symmetry definition.

The Buffalo:

I don't have an image... ugh...

137.86 tons,

asymmetrical,

no control surfaces,

no RCS,

no winglets,

0.5 second flight time,

three rockomax Mainsail engines,

three orange tanks,

4 side-mounted VTOL engines,

2 cockpits,

crew survived crash, that counts as a landing.

I get 0 score.

Hmm, I'll have to deduct some points for mechjeb. but you said it didn't work well, the symmetry is left/right, not top/down

so i'd say 1700 points.

however, it does not fulfill the 8 engine limit, if you still want to keep the submission, using that many jet engines would bring you down to about 1,000 but still, it's more than my 0.

EDIT:

Sorry, I accidentally remove the thing that said 8 engine limit when I polished the point system, I just added a deduction system.

4 jets, 1 LV-N, and two ions on the rover (because I built this for a pre-rover-wheel version). So that's 7 engines, of which only 4 are used in the atmosphere. There are 90-odd intakes on cubes, maybe that's what you're mistaking for engines?

By the way, 5000 for Duna, but nothing for other bodies?

pa1983 can clean up here on this one of course, totally stock.

Primary objective: 100 points

No winglets: 25 points

Orange flavored: 50 points

Nightmare Mode (Beyond Minmus): 1000 points

Manly Mode (Flyby of Duna): 5000

No mods, exactly 8 engines.

Total: 6,175

Craft file is here.

I attempted a crash-landing on Duna, unfortunately none survived (and I hadn't saved). Space-plane of death indeed. I had enough TWR, in retrospect I should have gone for a rocket-style landing, as I was able to lose almost all the velocity in the atmosphere.

I need to add stuff for other planets, I didn't think anyone could get a space-plane to jool.

and sorry about the engines, I thought you had 1 per-intake. I updated the score, and added a couple achievements.

Great craft, but how much does it weigh?

If you get to orbit you're more than halfway to anywhere.

Mine is a return-capable flight with loads of extra mass for story purposes. I never actually returned because I got the phase angle wrong, arriving at Kerbin when it was precisely on the opposite side of the sun. You can get a single-stage Laythe return under 10 tonnes without refuelling (antbin was the first to do it).

Great craft, but how much does it weigh?

Orange tank (36t)

Two cockpits 1t x 2

Skipper engine 4t

Jet engines 1.2t x 7

Landing gear 0.5t x 3

Intakes 0.011t x 64

Delta wings 0.07t x 12

... and I stopped counting

Total is at least 36 + 2 + 4 + 8.4 + 1.5 + 0.7 + 0.84 = 53.44 tons

Also I could have gotten "hard mode" by circumnavigating at least once, but I wasn't paying attention and ejected before the first full orbit.

okay. thx for the weight.

I don't understand the purpose of this challenge. What makes it a "plane of death?"

I've built a long range SSTO which can go all the way out to Eelloo, but it's got 150 units of mono-propellant, and just 1 cockpit, so I guess it's not eligible as a spaceplane of death?
