Millenium Falcon - hopefully the final buildup

Major convergence today on the big falcon. Issues remaining (due to time constraints mostly) are re-positioning COM to center of the vehicle, and permanently attaching the VTOL engines. I believe I can resolve both issues by editing the CFG file.

I do not foresee the ability to fly from the cockpit. It might be fun to just get the camera mod, and stick a few around the ship anyway. We never had those views in the movies.

I barely salvaged the takeoff on this flight as I had forgotten to engage SAS before liftoff. I decided to publish this video to demonstrate the controllability of the vehicle.

Would you think about using the cupola as a command pod?

Yeah I can do that. I may have that as an alternate, and also this. The problem will remain however that one cannot fly from the cockpit...

A few for today - had forgotten to show the new engine setup. I really had a chance to fly it yesterday. I am really dialing in on it now. Balance is nearly perfect. Today I am working on the VTOL engines, and hopefully the last details of v1.0.

Third version of the VTOL array. This is one part welded together with the Ubiozur Weld It mod, without which this project would have died in October. The number of engines is irrelevant, as I am editing the part.cfg file for my needs. I wil see how this looks. I am trying to keep the whole VTOL thing visually low key. I imagine for the 2.0 Falcon, (no timeline) I will try to learn how to make the VTOL thrust invisible.

The cockpit seems to be a hot topic. Here are my latest thoughts: I have been and still am ardently pursuing a totally stock Falcon. I am still on track for that. Users will only have to drop a CRAFT file and a part.CFG file into their installation. However also - the "Millenium Pod" MOD is too good to overlook, and I cannot NOT release an additional version with that. There has been interest in the Cupola. I tried it. I can't realease a Falcon (at least publicly) with the Cupola. I can't get past the looks of it. Also, I have not been able to overcome the issue of not having cockpit views yet, so the Cuploa is for the moment a moot topic.

I do hope to have cockpit views in v 2.0. I hope Rene Hansen the creator can make a Millenium Pod with internals. That would be fantastic ~~~

I had begun to create a cockpit with 4 Kerbonaut seats. I may revisit that as I was not aware of the Weld It mod at the time, and parts count on it was prohibitive.

Gonna wind down v 1.0 and get a release out tonight I hope.

Items abandoned to get 1.0 out:

VTOL

Command modules other than Mk 1-2

Cockpit visuals

Any method of recharging electrical power

For the cockpit visuals, why not just use the Cupola IVA on the Falcon pod? sure, it's a bit of hacking at part configs, but might let you fly it from in there.

Great idea!

Great idea!

Thought about this today. I have released an all stock Falcon, which was a big goal. I think I will go ahead and try to use the "Millennium Pod" for the exterior, and the cupola internal. I don't know how yet, but that is the goal for now. This will be on the 2.0 release.

The cockpit tunnel and the cockpit outside diameter are too big, and I will be scaling those down a little bit.

I hope for VTOL and landing gear as well. It's going to take some CFG learning to do all this. I anticipate taking the part that Weld It generates, and modifying it further by hand. I think I could do it in a day, because editing the CFG file and reloading the library is a much shorter process than restarting KSP.
