HELP how to do tech tree in career mode?

HELP MEEEEEEE!!! I was so looking forward to the career mode, I started playing it and the first thing on the tech tree I have to do is "How hard is rocket science,anyway?" so I built a suborbital rocket out of the parts I was given, reentered, and checked the r and d building and I had nothing accomplished, nor had I unlocked a new challenge. What am I doing wrong? please help!!!:(
