Optimal orbital inclination in Jool's orbit?

Recommended Posts

What would be the optimal inclination in Jool's orbit if we want to visit its moons in equatorial orbit without spending too much dV in matching the orbital inclination of the visiting body, taking into account all the other moons, their inclination and their distance relative to Jool? (Damn, this was a long question  )

No inclination. Only the outer moons have inclined orbits and getting into equatorial orbits of those is fairly easy given the low orbital velocity required to orbit them. You can reach them without doing any plane changes by getting an encounter at the ascending or descending node, and then you can do whatever plane change is necessary to make your orbit equatorial after you have been captured.

The moons are all generally in the equatorial plane, so "zero" is optimal.

It's not beneficial to get, say, any arbitrary 8 degree inclined orbit just because a moon you want to visit has an 8 degree inclination. You're probably also wanting to align your planes, and you can only do that by achieving the same inclination at a crossing node (Ascending or Descending).

You don't need a perfectly matched inclination to encounter another body, though... you simply need to pass through its plane in the right place and at the right time. Plane matching does make it easier to line things up, of course.
