Clearer explaination of Navball

Recommended Posts

After Kerbian exterminating genocide of my space program, and amount of rockets that crashed on Kerbin which amount will aswell take part at WW3.

I finally successfully made probe that eclipses Kerbin. So, yay!

Uhm, because I wanted to start crashing my ships and killing Kerbians on Mun and Minimus, I jumped to Orbit map, and set Moon as target.

I found out that new symboles appeared, offcourse I found out that orange indicator shows where ship will accellerate to; green shows where is dominating force moving my ship to. But after setting Mun as my target, purple appeared, I tried to fly there, but ugh, it didn't even got close to Mun.

And according to http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Navball it should have "helped" me to put correct traject on Mun.

Well, everend, I don't quite understand anyway how the rest of Navball sign work. And offcourse I read wikipedia, and yes call me an idiot, I still don't match words that are written there, with collaboration with reality of mine brain and Orbit map. Could someone explain me, in simple words what does these words mean when my target is Mun in method, in-mid-endout*?:

Retrograde, Target prograde, Target retrograde, Maneuver prograde.

* - Not official name, just, made up.

(Don't be blame me that I am idiot, some people cannot do anything against it, it's against our own will)

For celestial body, you don't really use the navball. The navball is very usefull for rendez-vous, but not so much for an encounter.

I will suggest you head over to the drawing board in the tutorial section to learn how an encounter with the mun work, or do the in game tutorial.

What other part of the navball? you know all the marker and their meaning.

Thats the point, I don't get other markers than green and orange, look I know how what it is in theorem, but how it does actually help me? How do I adjust it to my needs?

Green is the prograde/retrograde vector (the direction of the line on which you are travelling, your current orbit)

Purple points to and away from your target, when a target is selected. This is only useful for docking (and marginally for rendez-vous).

Blue points to the vector of the next navigation node.

And according to http://wiki.kerbalspaceprogram.com/wiki/Navball it should have "helped" me to put correct traject on Mun.

You can't use it for navigation, because there is no such thing as a straight line in space. You will never go anywhere by burning in a straight line towards something. That's a common misconception. Space navigation is all about modifying ellipsoidal orbits.

For interplanetary/lunar navigation, you have to use the map and navigation nodes.

Well, you haven't fully read my topic post. I said:

I repeat: "crash", not land. Offcourse I know that to land on Mun I need to make ellipses, but I am not dreaming about landing on Mun, I am just dreaming to be able to crash anywhere else as cause of impact (except on Kerbin) and without flying out of Kerbal (system?, Kerbin, Minimus and Mun). Thats the clue, I thought it was pointing to Mun.

In such case summary of my question is, how to crash on Mun? Because Orbit map won't help, and purple marker doesn't point to it.

The purple is a marker for where the target is *now*. However, many targets in an orbit, like the Mun, are moving. So if you want to hit them, just like deflection shooting, you need to lead your target.

Thank you. How to change prefix to [Answered!]?

He did fully read your post, and he fully answered how to do what you want. The Orbit map is what you want to use, and set Maneuver Nodes. Flying by Navball navigation is the least efficient method to do rocket science and won't help you get to Mun in any remotely efficient path. You're pretty much saying, I want to go straight to Mun completely ignoring the fact that I am swimming in an environment with HUGE gravitational effects from Kerbin and the Mun itself.

Two words: Maneuver Nodes.
