Can't do science?

I'm in career mode, and when I try to take a temperature or barometric pressure reading in high Kerbol orbit, and high and low Duna orbit, it says "Temperature/Pressure Scan can't be done right now." Why not? Am I doing something wrong? I can get non-vacuum readings from Duna's atmosphere, and it still won't let me do it.

Some Equipment won't work in the vaccum. Temperature only works close to a body or on the surface. Most Instruments only work on the surface. The Science Bay and Mystery Goo will work in Space though.

PS: You can see Info on the Displays of the Instruments, but that doesn't necessarily mean you can transfer the measurement.
