how to use small science instruments?

Those "old" thermometers, pressure, gravity and acceleration measuring instruments - exactly how am I supposed to use them? Most of the time I just get a message saying that it can't be used right now. When can I use them?

Each one has a different area of use. The thermometer has to be within the low orbit or lower (I think). Barometer obviously needs atmosphere. The seismic says it needs to be put on solid ground so yeah, land it.
