Amphibious Plane - Time Trial

Recommended Posts

Hey guys, I've been doing a lot of challenges of varying types and decided to finally post one of my own making. I searched through the first few pages of challenges to see if there was a similar entry and could not find one. If I am in error just let me know :)

Amphibious Plane - Time Trials

The challenge involves, by its name, building a plane in which you can cruise the seas as well as the skies. The scoring will be based on a time trial run given by the below stages.

Stage 1: Drive/fly your plane to the beach head at KSP. It should be noted that driving is the preferable option as it starts your clock only when you hit the water, and also I've heard that getting into the water too fast will send you to Davey Jones.

Stage 2: Cruise the seas over to the island air strip. No flying just above the surface, you should be plowing your way through the waves like a boat.

Stage 3: Make landfall and drive your way up to the air strip.

Stage 4: Take off and fly back to KSP. Take a screenshot of your plane once it hits 0m/s safely back on the KSP runway to show your time.

There's only one time modifier here folks:

Rocket Parts Used: Time x2 - This is an Amphibious Plane, not an amphibious rocket. It's been shown in the fastest boat challenge that the fastest of boats were almost exclusively rocket boats.

Take a screenshot of each stage of your attempt.

My run: 24:16

Woah! I can't make a seaplane (without FS floats or Tosh floats) for my life! :D

Sorry, but I can't do this. Water = doom, remember?

Still, if I can make one, I'll be sure to try it out.

I was actually surprised at just how easy it was to make one. A few structural fuselages with ram air intakes attached kept this thing nicely afloat. That being said I can add two time categories to the initial post for finishes: Stock and Modded. :) If you do try the challenge out I hope you find it as rewarding as I did.

I have a mod craft entry, B9, Firespitter and HSWT Sea Floats. I cruised over at 150m/s and flew back a bit faster for an 8:31. I think it'll take some more engines and go faster but that'll spoil the looks a bit :)

That is a sweet looking sea plane, is it cumbersome to fly or is it pretty smooth?

Great entry man, scoreboard is updated :D

Thanks, it's easy to control and it can take off and land on water without breaking anything, those B9 wings have massive lift :)

My entry, all stock, 162 m/s on water, >200 m/s in air. It's basically a normal plane with hydrofoils attached for water use.

I could probably shave a minute or two off my time because I slowed down to a crawl for the drive up the island and for the landing back at KSC, but I'll have to wait until I get back on a good computer tomorrow to retry.

To confirm a screenshot for each stage is required for this challenge?

I assume so, since that's what everyone else has done. Might as well, anyhow.

Yes, a screenshot per stage is required, and I'll add that to the rules in the OP. 4 stages, 4 screenies, not too demanding I feel :)

Also, screaming to the top of the Stock leaderboard is Ojimak, beating my score by over 15 minutes. Very impressive, great work. I hope you enjoyed the challenge :)

I had a go at stock as well, I can go over water at 220m/s and faster in the air but the transition getting to the runway is a lot harder that without motorized and steering wheels, I lost almost 2 mins faffing about near the dirt runway beach in a craft that can do the other parts quicker than the mod craft I entered :) I made an 8:46 though.

Talk about barebones design there. The downside is that the rules specify no rocket parts and I see you used the 1.25m short rocket fuel cans for fueling your plane. Doesn't DQ you, but it does get hit with the time x2 penalty for using rocket parts. Still it's pretty awesome that A: that thing flies, and B: that you otherwise came in with the shortest time.

That seemed quite harsh just for a fuel tank but it's OK, that design was too slow anyway :) I trimmed a bit weight and got the engines to attach on radial decouplers to hit 270m/s and a 6:05, it's still all stock.

While I agree it's a bit harsh, I have to have the cutoff somewhere, and may as well make it as black and white as possible, otherwise it becomes a slippery slope from what I've seen in other challenges.

That and hey, it inspired you to create a changed plane that got you to the top of the leaderboard!

love the float design. :)

Time to take away my extra fuel tanks and add more intakes/engines.
