I like to think that the Earth, tired of the asteroids constantly bullying it, decided to develop a species smart enough to go up to asteroids and smash stuff into them at high speed.

That almost defiantly is not what happened, but it is a nice thought.

Hah! Humanity as a smart planetary defense system - i love it :D Beats the opinion we are but viral infection destroying Mother Earth, as some ecologists spew around.
