[stock] costum launch towers

Launch towers are very important if your craft is too heavy to be supported under its whole weight sitting on the pad, on top of the engines.

Very often, spacecraft are so heavy that if they sat their weight on top of the engines, it would break the engines and the rocket would blow up.

Use launch towers (or "clamps"), you can greatly improve the stability and safety of your launches.

Be sure to move the launch clamps' stage to the same one as your engines. This way, when your engines fire, the clamps will release at the same time.

I use custom launch towers/clamps every rocket I use.

1. they look cool

2. getting the engines started before liftoff without losing any fuel(using fuel on the launch clamps)

My R-7 rocket carrying Sputnik 1, all engine are running(STATUS: MAIN) and ready for lift off.

Lift off of the R-7 carrying Sputnik 1, Launch clamps halfway retracting.

After the rocket cleared the launch pad... There's a little tilt to the clamps...

This is exactly Mulbin's Sputnik launchpad ...

I get the fuel tanks as counterweights, but what are you guys using for hinges?

Pretty much, nothing. The key is that once you decouple, the part that has to fall off becomes a separate object, and can pivot freely around a fixed pivot. But if I were you I would download one of the examples and break it apart. I myself find it useful to start building the umbilical arms from the ship towards the ground, and not the other way around (so the root part of the arm is the decoupler to the ship).

Rune. It can get a bit confusing at times, building in KSP.
