Workerbals!

The Kermmunist Information Channel is now live. The first video contains an important, historic announcement regarding Deep Space Probe IV and the Mohonik I Lander.

All workerbals are required to watch the video feed, unless they have something better to do.

Workerbals!

While it has been some time since last we updated you on the activities of the KerSpaPro, rest assured that work there has been more or less non-stop. The good news here is that the Design Buro, after many weeks of research and testing, have qualified the packages and modules for the Duna I mission. This folio provides background on the design process, problems encountered, and the ultimate solutions. And, as we mentioned before, the actual Duna I mission will be filmed and the video made available to the working class.

Year 1, Day 270 (dawn) Gigant 4 - Duna Mission has launched and is now in orbit around Kerbin! The Kermmunist Information Channel has captured moving pictures and photos, these will be presented to the Workerbal masses when the mission has been completed. Stay tuned to this post for further updates.

.....

Year 1, Day 271, 12:07

Gigant 4, commanded by Jebediah Kerman, co-commander Haldon Kerman, and Lander Specialist Nielman Kerman, has completed the Duna transit burn and is now enroute to Duna. The transit burn is projected to result in an encounter with Duna at 40km altitude. However, the burn required a post-Kerbin-escape correction, and the crew will be required to utilize the 'long' return window, with a projected Kerbin return at Y2,D148. Updates to follow.

Year 1, Day 337, 13:18

Gigant 4 has arrived in the sphere of influence of Duna. The crew has completed the aerobrake positioning burn, and will reach Duna periapsis at 11km above the surface in 11 hours. The folio now contains the first photo of Duna, taken by Haldon Kerman from the Command module.

Year 1, Day 338, 01:45

I like the 'smooshing' aproach, that looks like a good way to make serial staged rockets.

It allows you to pack a big punch into the same space as a smaller punch . . . but it has drawbacks as well. The decouplers are also smushed, and each tank that is carrying 3 other tanks puts a large load on the stages above in terms of thrust, and on the decoupler. The upshot is that stage separation is or can be dangerous . . . this can be addressed but the separations are always a mess visually - explosions, parts flying all over the place. I tried the smushing with separators rather than decouplers . . . but those couldn't handle the load and we had sub-optimal unplanned separations during flight.

To smush in the VAB, you have to position the units just right or 1) the VAB won't allow the attachment or 2) there will be a slight mis-alignment which will result in an unstable flight. I mean you have to get really really close during the attachment and make sure that the fuel tanks and engines are exactly aligned - one not higher than another. I might make a vid on the smushing technique if there is interest.
