[Music] Piano solo: An Endless SOI

I've tried to capture the impatience and excitement of waiting for a transfer orbit in Kerbol's SOI to finish, SO AS I CAN GET THIS SCRAP BUCKET TO DUNA. Yrrrggl... :D I think the 15/8 meter (for most of it) does the trick. This is officially the hardest song I've ever written, and it's tons of fun to play until my fingers start to ache...

Genre: Jazz.

An Endless S.O.I. (PDF)

A recording of me playing it:

An Endless S.O.I. (Soundcloud)

An Endless S.O.I. (MP3)

MIDI (missing only the arpeggios):

An Endless S.O.I. (MIDI)

Soundcloud

Anybody know why Soundcloud is acting like an idiot? It gives me an "OH NOES" page every time I click on one of the Soundcloud links, but serves the page properly when I reload it.

I like it!

I think I hear

in there nvm, Soundcloud auto-continued to Zelda's lulluby Jazz version :P:).

I do wonder, wouldn't the transcription be significantly easier to read if you had written it in 5/4 with a simple 'in swing' note? (the upper one on this image)

9/8+6/8 Doesn't confuse me (I have my roots in percussion), but from what I can gauge of most other musicians is that any unequal X/8 signature often results in anxiety attacks :P.

It is (for now) a bit above my capabilities on the piano (started playing oktober 2012) but I'll be sure to enjoy it.

(Why can't I add extra music to KSP? Like GTA).

Edit: What program did you use to write it? Musescore?

I'm glad you like it! (Wow, I don't think anyone's ever told me they tried the score before...)

I used Lilypond, a scoring markup language. That's also part of the answer for "why 15/8?": for Lilypond to produce a MIDI with the right rhythm, it needs the scoring to be really precise. The other part is that I'm a purist...

I'll try 5/4 with a swing, though. (I think the lead-in to measures 13 and 43 could remain 16th notes.) I've got another song I should try that on as well.

If you don't mind, could you let me know whether you find the fingering suggestions helpful? Or whether you find different fingering in those spots more comfortable? We all have different hands...

I don't usually put fingering in, but measures 9 and 11 in particular (and their corresponding measures at the end) gave me conniptions until I finally discovered that 4 crossing over 1 made them consistent - for me. :)

About the purist part: I've always considered 'double 8th=swing' composers a bit 'cheaters'. 5/4 with triplets could work out as well (and Lilypond might get that).

I use Musescore, and you can set the playback to 'swing' (for cheating composers :P).

It updates slowly though, and I wouldn't know how the UIs compare. All music writing software I tried thus far has a certain clumsiness to it, requiring lots of clicks or counter-intuitive keyboard presses to get things done. I just got used to this so I'm not going to try Lilypond yet...

I found the fingering a great help actually, but since I'm not that handy with a piano yet (and I gave up, perhaps too quickly) I wouldn't trust my judgement too much.

For bar 9&11: I tried to start with 5 on the D, 4 on Eb, then dive 5 underneath to E. Then 4-F and the same jump to 1-G. (that jump is a tad too big for me though, I could do it with 5-1, but barely, and not at that tempo).

So I found your 4 over 5 method better, since it allowed me to quickly take over that 4-F with 5 just before the big jump.

I'd like to raise another issue: We musicians are clearly a minority, and our threads get buried quickly. It might be a good idea to start a 'KSP fan-music' thread. To focus our attention. (someone created an 'Orbital Tango', I loved it, but can't find it anymore).

But new posters would get buried in the ensuing discussion... :(

PS, I just finished a full transcription of the KSP main theme on piano (the version HarvesteR played). I'll upload soon .
