Surface Sample Iron Man Challenge

So I am busy with Skyrender's Science challenge, and i thought i would challenge you.

Rules

  • Start a new Career
  • You have to get surface samples from Minmus, Mun and Duna
  • You have to get the samples with the least amount of launches , make sure you get enough science in the first launch to get to Duna quicker
  • All samples has to be returned to Kerbin and recovered
  • No mods or cheats
  • Screenshots of all Launches and science obtained, While on Mun, Minmus and Duna

I have done this already below:

Indeed... The rocket launched in the first image is clearly not the same as the ones shown on Minmus and Mun, so there must have been three launches total.

Maybe you meant two launches leaving LKO, and not two launches in total? Not *quite* the same challenge then. :P

Let's begin! Since this challenge is pretty easy overall, I decided to do a more hardcore variant: get all the samples on the second mission! The first one is for (just barely) unlocking the tech necessary to do this.

is21.jpg

The mission plan is pretty much my usual first one: get some biome data on Kerbin, then blast off to Minmus for a flyby and swing by the Mun on the way home.

is25.jpg

No surprise, the mission goes off without a hitch. It'd better; I've done it often enough!

is26.jpg

The resulting science is not exactly a ton, but actually more than I need to run the second one.

is27.jpg

Fuel Systems and General Construction are the secret most important tech tree nodes. Once you have struts, launch supports, and fuel lines, you can build anything.

is28.jpg

To wit! This craft is quite capable of getting to Duna, returning to Kerbin, visiting Minmus and the Mun, and then actually landing back home. It even has a fair amount of spare fuel just in case you're the impatient sort!

is29.jpg

is30.jpg

The first drop tanks are disposed of on the way out to Duna, as planned.

is31.jpg

Oh don't worry Jeb, I know exactly where I'm going...

is32.jpg

To Duna! I had to take the "long way" since I wasn't patient enough to wait 54 days for the planets to align, but that's alright; it cost nearly the same amount of fuel either way.

is33.jpg

The most hair-raising yet near-perfect aerocapture later (seriously, look at that!), I'm all set to land. Yep, straight from aerocapture.

is01.jpg

To keep the landing process streamlined and not get thrown all over the place, I balanced out the fuel in the remaining droptanks and disabled fuel flow on all of them. The landing was entirely up to the parachutes and main engine's central tank.

is02.jpg

is03.jpg

And it was a complete success, of course, because I am the master of Duna.

is04.jpg

is05.jpg

Back to orbit and back to Kerbin! One sample down, two to go...

is06.jpg

Since I want to stay in a fairly high orbit, this was about as low as my aerocapture around Kerbin went.

is07.jpg

A tiny adjustment later and I was on my way to Minmus. Hooray!

is08.jpg

"Why waste fuel?" is a motto I like. Instead of expending precious liquid fuel and oxidizer to land on such a puny target, I just made Jeb jetpack on down instead.

is09.jpg

is10.jpg

Great success!

is11.jpg

Returning to the ship was a little harrying, but I've done this sort of thing before, so it wasn't too bad.

is12.jpg

Next stop, the Mun!

is13.jpg

is14.jpg

Jeb likes what he sees. Because he sees it's time to go home!

is15.jpg

Disposing of the unneeded fuel tank (it had 24 or so liquid fuel and equivalent oxidizer left; I told you I over-planned this sucker!), Jeb makes his grand entry.

is16.jpg

Mission all over. Let's see our tally.

Not too shabby for a soil collection mission! That was a fun way to spend the day.

@Sky, thanks for all ways doing my challenges you are the coolest person on earth :P

@the rest sorry i removed that one launch, that was a failed launch, which i had to redesign the second launch. I promise i only did 2 successful launches to complete this.

Regards
