The Versatility Marathon Challenge

Recommended Posts

If I can't get it to work tonight, I am going to start the career mode over, and spend the next day launching communications satellites, which is never fun.

Ah man, well this challenge will be up until Friday and then I'll have the details archived. Hopefully you'll be able to complete it by then. If not, not all is lost, you can still take as much time as you need to complete the mission, all the old missions will be available. I'll put the details into a doc on a google drive so they can be referenced. My game was actually bugging out too later today so I ran the Steam verify game cache and it found a corrupted file, and that fixed it for me. Hopefully you'll have better luck in the future.

Right as I posted this your new pic popped up. As long as the core craft can complete the shakedown run to the Mun and back without additional attachments it should be fine. If your section that you deleted was causing the issues then this would go under the Kraken attack category I would think. As long as this ship is permanent with the way you want it in space then you can continue with the mission, but you'll have to start the mission from scratch with this new ship since you modified it.

My internet is back! Wohoo!!!

Helpful Hint for the Next Mission: Practice your precision landing skills, you'll be glad you did

Glad your Internet is back. Not glad about precision landing. I suck at precision landing - and I already told myself I was not going to use MechJeb for landing in this challenge.

All I did was lose the lander that had docked to the rear of the cargo module. The main craft had not changed at all.

Well, you'll have plenty of time to practice then, pinpoint accuracy will be key. I'm doing some ground work to try and ensure success as long as you guys can hit the target LZ. Miss by just 1-2 km and you'll have a rough time. It will be fun, but very challenging.

Headed to the Mun, for stage one of the mission.

Orbital insertion burn.... and still burning.... and burning.... and burning..

First satellite deployed. Its not big, but its more than 1.25 tons, its 1.5 tons.

Sending research back to KSC.

Approaching Minimus for stage two of the mission.

Finally back home.

And mission mostly complete.

I am not even worried about my score, its not great, but I am just happy I completed most of the tasks, except the landing on the Mun and Minimus. I lost my lander with that glitch and was already IN route when it happened. So not thrilled.

On a side note, I plan on doing this challenge with one of my SSTOs unscored, just to see if it can complete the tasks. I think my SVO line might be able to pull this off, if not I know my SP line can.

You can always redo the mission. Unless you want your score here to be finalized?

Not going to redo the mission, I am fine with it being finalized. This is a good shakedown test for future work on the XI line of Ion powered craft. I am learning a lot about this ship and how to improve on the design.

Exactly, use the single directional red ones and they only separate from one joint, that way the decoupler doesn't become debris.

Ye, I know that. So, Can I have my 25 points back?

If I send a craft to collect all the debris?

Ok, so looking at your mission, you didn't detach any components other than the mission critical ones, so that's +25 points there. And I didn't see any use of jet engines so that's +5 points.

If we take the mission at it's core, it's 3 parts.

1. Deploy 2 satellites

2. Land on each moon

3. Return to Kerban after the mission without ever refueling.

So of these 3 mission critical tasks, you were only able to complete 2 of them. Although we can look at the mishap as a bug and not entirely your fault.

So of the 150 points, I can only award 100 points for 2 of 3 tasks completed.

So, 150/3 = 50

2*50 = 100

100 + 25 + 5 = 130

Total for mission 01 = 130

I am happy with that. Not bad for a experimental Ion powered craft.

I must ask if we were to build a core craft right now, would mission 2 (for when it comes out) count for points or is it too late to join in this challenge and still be scored?

I imagine it will still be scored.

Anyone can join the challenge at any time. If you start with mission 2, then you can if you want to. However, to get a competitive score, you would need to complete mission 1 also. Mission 1 will also be available after mission 2 comes out, I'll have all of the details archived.

Ah,so if I get a core craft into orbit quickly I can compete in mission one still

Now I just have to prove my shuttle can lift 15 tons into orbit to rack up those points

EDIT: I saw the no reverting flight post, does that negate quick-saving or just starting over the entire launch or mission?

Yeah, you will also have to complete the shakedown run to the Mun and back to Kerban for the core craft to be approved. Then your good to go for the first mission. Mission 1 will still be up till Friday.

For shuttle missions, you have to post screenshots of the shuttle prelaunch with the payload. Once the payload is in orbit, I need a screenshot that shows the payload mass to prove that it's 15 tons or greater. Then you have to successfully land your shuttle on the KSC runway. If you miss the runway, then it doesn't count.

No reverting flight, would mean no starting over from the time of launch. For quicksaving, that's up to you. There's no way to see if someone quicksaved or not. It's more challenging if you go without quicksaves.

Honestly the hardest part is the shakedown run.

Oh and don't worry I am not trying to get my SVO-21 to be scored. I was just seeing if I could build a SSTO that could do everything or at least most of the things on the mission list.

I had one that could have done them all, but it was lost in the .21 to .22 upgrade.

Dangit, I land there more than I doat the actual KSC, will have to get landing practice

I may have to get Kettysburg running soon so I can actually glide some distance, which Keburan simply has issues doing. At least Keburan is always recoverable
