The Versatility Marathon Challenge

So I've finished my core station, I'm getting ready to test it on the tour the neighborhood exercise. I just wanted to okay a few non stock parts:

A nicer looking 1.25m to 2.25m adapter plate from B9 with slightly more mass than the stock one

A fancy hybrid docking port that is able to dock with both 1.25m and 2.25m docking nodes

A nuclear engine with approximately 4 times the mass and 4 times the thrust of a normal nuclear engine. It also has 820 ISP.

I'll need to see a screenshot of it for approval. I don't know about this nuclear engine... Unless the fuel consumption rate evens out the extra power it provides, it seems a little over powered compared to the stock one. The other parts are fine.

Heres a screen shot of the three. I could manually dial down the nuclear engines ISP to 800, in line with the regular one. Then it would be the same as 4.5 nuclear engines.

Also, Engineer Redux okay? It only provides stats...like a toned down Mech Jeb.

Also also, I love the second mission. Options 2 and 3 are going to be hard! I would recommend making them worth a few more points (relatively to option 1).

Yeah, if it has the same ISP as the other ones, then I would feel better about it. Engines with power differences could give people advantages over those with stock engines, so if you dial down the ISP, then I'll approve it. The other parts are fine.

Engineer Redux is fine, Mech Jeb is fine.

You have a point about the points...

Do you think 100 point differences would be better compared to the 50 that's there now?

So:

Option 2: 350

Option 3: 400

Or

Option 2: 400

Option 3: 500

I like the second points option.

Even though I am most likely going to just go for mission option 1.

I would probably prefer the first set, since I think options 2 and 3 are going to be about equally as hard (what 3 has in initial difficulty, 2 makes up for in fuel costs, time, and manuver planning for the 4 trips.)

On another note, what exactly do you mean by getting a payload up in a shuttle? The point value seems pretty high on that.

Completed Mission 1

I know what I need - Complete a full mission without detaching any parts other than the mission critical ones = +25 points (not sure I can apply this one or not. I jetissoned the satellite tender onto the Mun, but it was arguably "mission critical.")

Jet engines are for planes - Don't use jet engines to lift anything into space unless that jet engine is on an aircraft = +5 points

Bring the Gang along for the ride - For each additional Kerbal brought on a mission and returned to Kerban Orbit after the mission is complete (All Kerbals must be in a pod, external command seats not allowed) = +10 points x 5 Kerbals = 50pts

Mission complete with two satellites deployed and one landing per moon without refueling = +150 points

One satellite deployed on both equatorial and polar orbits for Minmus = +10 points

One satellite deployed on both equatorial and polar orbits for Mun = +10 points

More than one Kerbals lands on a moon = 5 points x 3 extra Kerbals = +15 points

Deploy a ground communications uit attached to a rover body = +10 points x 1 rover = +10 points

so...

either 275pts or 250pts.

Lol, TML "This is the first real challenge!"

By the way, I like to use dynamic warp and bring the timewarp down to 0.5 in order to handle the lag with higher part launches. (Then usually resume normal timewarp when your in orbit)

Alright.

Meaning that your mission payload attachment would have to be sent up in a shuttle, undocked in orbit. Then the shuttle would have to return to the ground and land on the KSC runway ready to send up the next payload. The shuttle should have a launch vehicle similar to NASA's shuttle launch set sup.

Okay, after much development, my core station The Spirit of Jebediah is complete.

screenshot121.png

Its modular, with independent docking/RCS/Manned or unmanned modules, 4 satellites, and 148 brave kerbals aboard. *Proud*

Also in the screen shot is the adjusted nuclear engine for approval.

Does the escape and rescue pod have to be an actual pod, or can the Kerbals be returned to Eve orbit on lawn chairs?

Likewise for landing.

You can use the external seats for both, but the kerbals must be transported to and from Eve in a pod on the main ship. For sending them down to the surface and back up, use whatever gets the job done.

Your core craft has to be all one piece with nothing docked to another docking port. The majority of the ship is fine except for those 2 attachments that you already have docked to it, those need to come off. The engine on the bottom is fine now. Remember that, if you decide to bring along satellites and things like that, they have to go wherever the core ship goes due to the rules. I would recommend attaching them later after you do the shakedown run to Mun and back to LKO.

Edit: Actually, if those attachments are like docking assistants or something like that and they're meant to be permanently docked with the ship and act as orbital tugs, then they can stay, but they will need to always be with the core ship.

Nice mission, that Mun landing was looking a little harry there for a bit. I find that using RCS to counter the horizontal velocity when going in for a landing is the best way to go, that way you can keep your craft straight and just use the translation controls. But very well done on the first mission. Your point totals are the same as what I'm getting and the +25 points for I know what I need are applied, everything that I saw was part of the mission critical gear. The case were this would get taken away is if you have to ditch a section at some point because it's out of fuel and just dead weight or leaving fuel tanks in interplanetary space. So your fine for this mission.

Your total points earned is 275 points.

Please list all the science gear for me. Thanks.

I dont want to miss any.

SC-9001 Science Jr.

Mystery Goo

Double-C Seismic Accelerometer

PresMat Barometer

GRAVMAX Negative Gravioli Detector

2HOT Thermometer

Communotron 88-88

The science package is meant to look cool and not return to orbit, so have fun with the designs. Putting it on a rover body may help if you land off target.
