Editor lags a LOT

Recommended Posts

In the editor, the game runs pretty smoothly, but when I press another tab or next page,

it freezes for like 30 seconds and loads. It's really getting on my nerves when the part I need is in the back

and I have to wait an eternity to get there.

During flight, there's no problems, the game runs smoothly.

The problem began in 22.0. In 21.0, I had no problems with the editor.

I took a look at the Task Manager and I see it uses over 95 percent of my memory.

Twice as much as my Firefox with >2000 tabs! I've tried closing all other programs, a fresh install, and pretty much everything.

My specs:

Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Intel® Core2 Quad CPU Q9550 @ 2.83 GHz

4 Gt RAM

Nvidia GeForce 9700 with 512 mb VRAM

Any help?

Yeah, your computer doesn't have enough RAM to handle some ship builds. It starts getting noticeable once you exceed 800 parts, really noticeable in the 1000 part range. As far as what it's loading, I'm not entirely sure, but I guess it has to retrieve the info on all of your parts that you have on the ship and what those parts can do in action groups. Other than that, the amount of parts in your current ship build is being saved to memory.

I notice this too and I'm running an Intel quad core i7 4.0 ghz 32gb RAM and an EVGA GTX 690 4gb. When I'm building ships I'm using 8gb of my RAM from my PC stats readout.

Also, polygon models take up a lot of memory depending on how many polys you have to render on screen at one time.

Any mods installed?

No, completely vanilla.

It still lags with a very small ship, about 20 parts, without any action groups. And the flight goes smoothly, no problem there.

Interesting, you may have a corrupt file in the game files itself. A good way to check is, if you downloaded the game through Steam. Go to your library, right click on Kerbal Space Program, then click properties at the bottom, then click the local files tab on the top, then click Verify Integrity of Game Cache. See if that solves your problem. If it doesn't fix it, try uninstalling the game and reinstalling it. Copy your saved game with your ships to a folder and then just add that folder when it's done installing the new game.

If neither of these solutions work, then you have a hardware or software issue on your computer, either in the operating system, or part of the processor, RAM, or graphics card. A system or graphics driver could also be to blame. This shouldn't happen with low part number craft.

Yeah, that's standard operating procedure with any Steam game that doesn't seem to be working properly. If anything like this happens again, just do these steps first and that will either fix it or help you narrow down the problem further. This usually seems to happen if a file gets interrupted through the downloading process, you didn't get all of the pieces of an update, or the game didn't install correctly.
