FTL and time dilation

Imagining the effects of > C velocities is difficult to explain because it's impossible. It's like if you asked me "What would be the social ramifications on mankind if Earth never existed?" You'd probably look at me with an odd glare and go "Uh, how can humanity exist without Earth?", and there's our problem. I'm asking "how can you have a velocity past c?"

The reason it's so difficult to imagine is because we know you can accelerate forever. You can do constant 1G accelerations till the end of time. At the speed of light, the entire Universe will have a volume of zero to you because you'll be able to transverse its entire length in zero time. You can go from the Milky Way to Andromeda in less than one Plank Time, to you.

How do you go faster than infinite velocity? What are the effects of faster than infinity? I dunno - hard to explain. It's probably easier to discuss the social ramifications of Earth not existing.

Am I right by saying that when going faster than light time would have to be in reverse along with mass? And if so would you not be travelling backwards?

It's not "inverse". I don't know where this myth originated, but there is nothing like that related to FTL travel.

Hey K^2, can the effects of the expansion of space between Galaxies on the propagation of information be compared to negative time values? If only because such regions can essentially become "white holes" where nothing can ever reach them due the the > C expansion rates?

I may or may not have any idea what I'm talking about.*

i guess you talking about gravitational theory here

if what you say happens like you say, answering that would require the graviton theory

and the humanity still have no clue of how that works

Time Dilation only applies if you are accelerating conventionally.

If you use something akin to an alccubiere drive, then it doesn't apply, since the ship uses a sort of gravitational 'loophole' to get around this and the light speed barrier.

Erm... My understanding of expansion is rather rudimentary. I can write down a very simple metric which would have expansion consistent with Hubble law, and yeah, such a metric would have a horizon - a distance from beyond which information will never reach you, and which you can never reach. So it'd be like an effective end to the universe you know or could ever know, while the universe can actually be much bigger or infinite.

As far as I understand, something like that is expected to exist in our universe. But I'm a little sketchy on the details. Does that answer it somewhat?

Agent O: "Chocolate milk relieves temporal fracture headaches."

Agent J: "What's a temporal fracture?"

Agent O: "A break in the time line."

Agent J: "I don't know what you're talking about."

Agent O: "Time travel! Time travel."
