SAS and ASAS difference

Recommended Posts

SAS is a function, a capability. Every pod has it, manned or unmanned.

IAS is an obsolete part which is basically more massive IRW and has a SAS function IRW lacks. There's no purpose in using it except if you have a craft that has no SAS-capable part such as pod. For example, if you have a craft with EAS-1 External Command Seat, using IRW will not provide torque because there's no SAS-function. That's the only function IAS is good for. Basically a useless part that confuses people and makes crafts heavier than needed.

"Advanced S.A.S Module, Large" is like a large IAS.

Squad should remove IAS and add SAS functionality to IRW, so we'd have small and large reaction wheels with SAS. That's all we need. They've chosen to keep it alive because older saves would not work without it. Not a good decision if you ask me.

This is no longer correct. As of 0.21.1 every command pod, probe core, and reaction wheel part (inline reaction wheel, inline advanced stabilizer, and large ASAS) has the SAS function.

If you want to know more about SAS you can go to the tutorial in my signature.

As for the IAS, the others are correct, it provides exactly the same function as the IRW but weighs more; don't use it.

Although its internal part name is sasModule it does not provide SAS, but may be used by it.

Even if Wiki got this wrong (I don't know at this moment), you could've at least pointed out that detail, not saying that the entire post is wrong. I've asked the same thing a while ago and it was answered thoroughly.

K, good to know. Now how do I change it to [Answered] ?

You edit your opening post and change the category.

I wouldn't trust the wiki for any really up to date information about part functions. In any event, the relevant .cfg file code is:

MODULE

{

name = ModuleSAS

}

Anything with this listed in the .cfg file will provide the SAS function, and as I mentioned all of the command pods, probes, and reaction wheel parts have this line.

Until they give the IAS a useful function I suspect this question will continue to be asked, since there is nothing in their in-game description to indicate what purpose the IAS has and why it should have a higher mass.
