Part snap rotation in VAB

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I have a problem with the rotation of the parts in the VAB, I'm trying to make a sky-crane setup but the rotation of the multi-snap is giving me problems, I want it like a 4 pronged type thing around the section but this is what it's doing instead:

It seems to me that the rotation plane is wrong, can I change this?

Thanks

Joe

Does the root part of your craft belong to that stack of structural fuselage? I _think_ the axis used for symmetry rotates with the root part. In general, symmetry tends to not work as you would like if you try to do anything else than symmetry around a single stack containing the root part (i.e. normal rockets).

As said before, the game chooses a single axis to be symmetrical about. If your part tries to use symmetry differently it does weird thing, like placing it symmetrical around a part your try to surfattach it to - those mechanics are weird though and i try to avoid them as much as possible. I.e. try to avoid using summerty when youre nkt placing symmetrically around your central axis anymore. Right now it looks like your axis isnt vertical like you want it to. Try rebuilding and making sure you start off with the stayoutnik, this should fix your problems.8

So can it be changed?

I can't make what I want in the VAB, so I use the SPH to make it then save it in the subassemblies but when I do that it safe the attachment points wrong...

When this happens to me, I use a workaround:

- flip the ship to the desired symmetry orientation

- attach a temporary strut on the ship (I usually use a Modular Girder Segment)

- to this temporary strut, attach the part you wish to attach symmetrically to (Modular Girder Adapter in your pic)

- attach the symmetry part (Modular Girder Segment in your pic). If you did the steps right, it should attach the way you want.

Then remove this assembly, delete the temporary strut, and return the ship to original orientation. You can now attach the assembly where you wanted it to go in the first place. ta-da
