Working Helicopter Challenge - Stock Only - Photovoltaics - No Fuels

Recommended Posts

Fellow Kerbalians! All of our rocket fuel and xenon has been stolen!

The criminal Kerbal, Kookoo Kerman, has cleaned out our caches! Catch that Kerbal!

You can find him on the islands at heading 120-135 from the rocket launch pad. With the ocean blocking our way, we'll have to take to the skies. But without our rocket fuel, how will we get there?

Enter The Helikerbter: spinning SAS modules + wings

Rules:

Vertical take off and landing (No parachutes! -- Landing gear okay)

Must spin, yet still be controllable.

(Hard to differentiate these from ornithopters rules wise - if you're flapping your wings, it doesn't really count, use best judgement)

0 points crashing into the ground before the water.

2 points crashing into the ocean.

5 points crashing into the island.

25 points landing on the island without any parts exploding.

10 points reaching the island with only probes.

50 points reaching the island with the first Kerbal, +10 for each Kerbal after the first.

+1000 if your craft can go faster than 500 m/s (and survive the trip)

+10000 if your craft can circle Kerbin without running out of batteries

+100000 if your craft is capable of reaching a sustained orbit

To get us started:

My 2 spinning probes can run reconnaissance over the island, max speed ~450. They can run forever in direct sunlight, and have a good amount of batteries, but probably not enough to orbit Kerbin. I'm sure I could land them consistently if I could control my ship better.

Score: 12 (I have a lot of trouble crashing into the island for some reason)

I can't see your design very clearly but it appears to me like abuse of bugs in aerodynamics rather than what could technically be called a working helicopter.

Just recently I crashed a plane into ocean and got to watch my detached control surfaces reach supersonic speeds on their own without any power at all.
