Could someone please explain to me how you actually do this. In a simple way. Is there a plugin? also, how do you export planets into Cinema 4D or blender? I have seen some awesome renders of kerbin along with the rest of the planets and I would love to give it a try.

Rareden explains the process on the thread you got those images from. Youll need toread through the pages to find it though..

I didn't match the angles between my pose and the screenshot but this gives you some idea. Again, with black PLA it is hard to make out many details. I might try and print it larger to make things like the decoupler knobs more obvious.

Would you mind posting the .stl file for us? And someone already mentioned this, but are you sending it to shapeways with textures?

I know this is an oldie (uncovered during a Google search), but I think I can help out a little with this question.

The method I've found to be the least (relative) hassle and requiring just a bit of cleanup (if you know what you're doing), is to use 3D Ripper DX to export an .obj file, then bring that into Blender to remove the unwanted bits.

From there, export .3ds and import into Sketchup, where it can be and shear-scaled (the .obj export does some weird things with the model orientation sometimes) and refined as necessary.

From there, the Mün's the limit.

It will not result in a fully textured model though. For that you'll have to do some file gymnastics with the .dds files that 3D Ripper DX can also produce (which is its own set of "interesting" hassles, even if you've got a converter plugin for Photoshop).

For my purposes, the limitations were easily ignored, as I don't need the stock textures, just the general design. There are extensions available for Sketchup to give it .stl export capabilities too!
