Science in career mode?

Recommended Posts

Hey I skipped the last update and have not played in a while, but after this update I decided to try career mode. I cannot figure out how to get science with the starting parts though? I have launched and landed a rocket on land next to the launch pad, and tried transmitting data back and then going back to the space center. I have tried going into space and then back down and transmitting data while in space(though not enough fuel to do a orbit), and then again when I landed. Neither way has given me any science points to use in the research center? What am I missing here? I tried looking at the wiki the but wiki site is down right now(showing a to many connections error). Thanks for any help!

To start with You'll want a simple rocket. You can click on your capsule and do a crew report you can also do EVA reports and surface samples. To get the data you are either going to need to put an antenna or aerial on your space craft, or you can recover the vessel either by hovering your mouse over the altimeter when you are on the ground, or doing it from the tracking station. Try and find a youtube video if you are still confused.

Best to start simple, right click to activate banner for selecting crew reports, do an EVA at apogee with a report, land, eva and do a report and soil sample, then recover vessel.

Best to recover vessel rather then attempt transmitting data as that takes tons of battery power. Once you unlock solar panels and extra batteries, you will be good for transmitting data.

Simple first rocket, note staging.

Simple sub orbiter in tier one with goo canisters. Recover them for max science points.

Later stage probe lander.

Enjoy and succeed by starting simple.

Ah lol, I had 6 flights built up and was trying to transmit data instead of just recovering. I kept sending flights out and figured out how to transmit data via the antennae by right clicking the actual capsule instead of the antennae after the post, by landing on Kerbal and transmitting the crew reports. There needs to be a pop-up or something definitely to make that obvious as I fiddled around the last few hours launching multiple ships till I finally figured out the antennae, and did not realize I could just recover my ship by hovering the mouse over the altimeter up top(the mouse is not needed much in flight nor do I have any reason to go up there with the mouse). Thanks also for letting me know about going to the tracking center to recover, as I was able to go there and retrieve all of those flights. I still only ended up with 10 science from all of those sadly, so I wasted a lot of time :(.

Also thanks SRV Ron for the tips I will use them :).

Better yet, don't even include antennas on your manned pods until you have unlocked solar panels. Until then, use the SAS sparingly until you get the panels. Once you have solar panels, you will be able to use the Stayputnik for probes to explore deep space and to land on other worlds.

Keep in mind that the LV-909 does not have a generator, so, when doing a Mun or Minmus flyby mission, keep the SAS turned off except as needed for control during a burn. You will lose control of your rocket should the battery go dead.

Actually, the simplest rocket is just a manned pod. Period. Go EVA, take a sample from the launch pad, make an EVA report, get back in, make a crew report, and recover the pod. If you want to go wild (which you obviously should), add a goo canister and start the experiment. This gives you enough science points to unlock at least one or two technology nodes.

Soil samples give an enormous amount of science points, so make sure to land on another different biome every time you launch and don't forget to take samples before recovering the craft.

1. In VAB, add the basic command pod.

2. Launch.

3. Right click pod, perform crew report, save it.

4. EVA from pod. With luck, while hanging on the ladder, your Kerbal can do an EVA report as 'flying over Kerbin's shores'. If so, save the report, right click on the capsule, and store the data.

5. Release from ladder, have Kerbal perform EVA report and surface sample. Grab ladder, climb up, and board capsule.

6. Recover the craft.

That should get you enough science to get the first upgrade, and get the goo canister. At which time you can add a goo canister to the capsule and repeat the above steps, adding the goo experiment before recovering the craft. If you want you can do the same thing from the spaceplane hanger, and get the data from the Runway in addition to the Launchpad.

I've got a post on reddit that goes over the sources of pre-science-part science and describes how to get over 130 points of science on your first mission. Even if you don't try to follow the recipe, it'll show you the options that you might be overlooking. It was written for 0.22, but pre-science-part science hasn't changed much in 0.23.
