Can we just say thank you for Squad's latest attention to performance tweaks?

I do also have issues with the ocean. Occasionally the land too, but mostly the ocean. Both pre and post I am hitting around ~20FPS and no better and doesn't matter the size of my ships.

I haven't done sandbox since the update and I haven't unlocked enough tech to build really ridiuclously large rockets yet, but I'd say so far it does seem faster when away from Kerbin/not looking at an ocean. With oceans around, I don't notice any speed increase. Without oceans, it does run more smoothly than before. I do deffinitely not starting the game and scene transitions seem noticably faster. I have gotten some bad lag in the VAB though.

If you really think so, check your settings for your older save and see if they're the same. If so, then try sliding your physics delta-t up a bit? For smaller ships particularly I've found this can increase framerates.

This is not possible. Every new version of KSP, I have to change the settings, because they are reset. And, I always start from a new save every new version.

Something interesting that I've noticed about this update is that whenever Kerbin's atmosphere is on screen, my FPS will not budge up or down from 17. On the other side of the scale, if the atmosphere is not on screen, my FPS will go up to 60.

Does this seem odd to anyone else? Oh and I may as well add that my graphics settings are as follows.

(Max Physics Delta Time: 0.04)

Terrain Detail: Very Low (Which is basically Low, but with the Ocean Max Subdivision set to 1.)

SM3 Terrain Shaders: Enabled

Terrain Scatters (WIP): Enabled

Scatter Density: 50%

Render Quality Level: Simple

Texture Quality: Half Res

Fallback part shaders: False

Aerodynamic FX Quality: Low

Screen Resolution: 1920x1080

Full Screen: Enabled

Anti-Aliasing: Off

V Sync: Off

Frame Limit: 60 FPS

Pixel Light Count: 4

Shadow Cascades: 2

Also, my CPU is an AMD Athlon II X2 215, my GPU is a Radeon HD 5570 1GB, and my RAM is 3GB

Cori, are you still using that same setup? What OS are you using? I have the same card and I'm a bit frustrated with launch frame rates and am trying to figure out optimal settings. RIght now I'm mucking about in Ubuntu as I heard KSP runs a bit better in 64 bit.

Tested Cori's settings. I'm an AMD x6 cores in Ubuntu 64 with the same card. There was a definite improvement but not satisfactory.

Before the changes, while sitting on the launchpad, the time counter was yellow (meaning low FPS). After changes, it quickly fluctuated between yellow and green. A good sign!

After launch of a simple rocket (probe core and a SRB) it quickly went yellow as more Ocean came into view. Then my rocket exploded. While in the position it was I looked around. If I looked straight down with minimal ocean in view the Time counter would flash a little green. When more ocean was in view it would go yellow. Looking straight up goes full green. It's definitely the ocean.

I'm wagering it has to do with the transparency of the ocean textures. Does anyone know of a way to disable the transparency?I don't think simply replacing the texture file would work as the game would still try to run images through the transparency filter for the those textures. Make sense?

...It's definitely the ocean...

The 'ocean bug' is well know and affects Kerbin, Laythe and Eve.

Open settings.cfg in notepad, or some other text-editor and search for 'ocean'. You will find a section like this:

{

name = KerbinOcean

minDistance = 2

minSubdivision = 1

maxSubdivision = 2

}

Where the default settings - have higher settings. Change minDistance and maxSubdivision to 2 as above (or experiment) and this should at least partly solve it. Apparently the problem is that there are two surfaces that have to be rendered instead of one. Above 160km (IIRC) the effect disappears and you should get 'normal' operation.

NB: There are 2 (or 3?) 'ocean' sections in settings for each of the three affected planets. Change both/all the Kerbin ones and those for the other planets too, if you are likely to be visiting them soon.

Can't say anything for sure because I haven't played KSP more than sporadically this year, and haven't actually tested framerate or controlled for background programs much  but the game certainly feels slower on my 08 Macbook. Smoother, but slower.
