Engine stacking dead in .23?

Recommended Posts

Looks like those of us who love to clip face a major hurdle with .23 - apparently engine stacking is no longer effective or possible. You can clip for sure, but thrusts aren't pushing out past secondary parts that may block the thrust.

Example:

clip any engine to the top of a fuel tank, and thrust works fine.

add any part to the bottom of the fuel tank (such as an intake, or second tank, or even another engine), and thrust is cut off entirely. no push (well there is some but its like less than 1%), though the engine is running. as if the thrust is now blocked by the second added part. i know, the change is more realistic, but for clipped designs it renders aesthetics clipping for VTOLs and SSTOs impractical.

this is deadly to many pre .23 SSTO designs, and kills all stacked VTOL designs. anyone found a work around yet?

please do NOT turn this into a clip vs no clip thread. this thread is for clippers to confirm this issue and discover a work around.

i'm wondering how you did your engine clipping - my usual engine clipping still works for the moment.

you can't have any part blocking the exhaust of your engines (the emmision point can be 'inside' another part, that still works. but if you have any part 'below' the emmission point, it will effectively block the thrust. and there's nothing new with that - it behaves like that since quite a long time...

Just one thought I had once I saw you, a builder whom I know knows his stuff, confirmed my hope that the title was a confusion with the inner workings of engine clipping and it's all business as usual:

Phew!

I don't even know how many things I have flying around in my save with clipped engines. And I do love my save, had it since 0.18 and it still (mostly) works.

Rune. If it endures to 1.0, it'll have significant historic value. There are parts flying there with the old RCS quantities.

yea, I didn't know about the exhaust blocking thing. I guess I never ran into it until I tried something novel with the new rapiers. I'll keep testing. I have a non rapier VTOL that wont lift off the ground, but I'll recheck the stack to make sure it's not exhaust blocking. I know in .22 it worked, so something's gotta be up with my design. argh. the joy of engineering.

I agree, if you have anything surviving into 1.0, you'll definitely be able to claim historical value.
