Cant maneuver in space

Recommended Posts

This seems to have started since patch 0.23, but I cant be sure because I am quite new to the game. I have been playing campaign mode, and just recently traveled to the muns orbit. I made a couple tweaks to my mun orbiting vessel today (just after patch), and now, the minute I reach stop throttling, I lose all pitch and yaw controls with my ship. Yesterday when i was playing, I would ascend until my apoapsis reached ~100K meters, cut my engines, then position and burn prograde when i reached the apoapsis. now I get my apoapsis to ~100k, and I am unable to maneuver once my engines are cut.

the changes I made to the ship was to use FL-T800 engines instead of FL-T400 so nothing that should affect this

my ship is setup as follows.

Command Pod MK1 (attached is parachute)

Science Jr 9001 (attached is 2 batteries, a comms antenna, and mystery goo)

FL-T400 fuel tank

LV-909 engine

Decoupler

FL-T800 fuel tank

LV-T45 engine

Decoupler

FL-T800 fuel tank

FL-T800 fuel tank

LV-T45 engine

for the beginning ascent, I have 2 solid rocket engines to get me to a decent altitude

Hopefully someone can help a newbie out

Thanks

Five possible problems.

1. You are still in time warp- forget this all the time, i flip out, only to realize i am still in 5x timewarp.

2. You ran out of electricity, but you have a kerbal, so that shouldn't be a problem. clicking the resources tab in the top right will show you this.

3. running engines generates electricity, so when you cut them ,and don't have solar panels, you are losing electricity.

4. You don't have enough torque/ turning force, with bigger ships, turning is harder and requires reaction wheel or RCS

5. It may be just a new bug. That happens with updates.

Hope i answered you question? :)

You have no solar pannels. Without electricity, you have no torque, and thus no control. The LV-T45 engine generates electricity, but the 909 does not. They do all have pitch though, which gives you control while you are burning the engine. But if you are down to the 909 and out of electricity, that is the ONLY time you are going to have control now, since you have no way of recharging power.

You probably transmitted science along the way, draining the batterys with no way of recharging

Running your engine at very low thrust allows you decent maneuvering without screwing up your orbit too much. Then, when properly oriented, use full thrust to perform the maneuver.

I used that a few times in 0.22 career mode, too.

Thank you all for the tips, This happens the instant I turn off engines. I checked and its not because I am running out of electricity, I have a full juice at this point. I also found out that I am moving, just really slowly. I think the problem is that the ship at this point in my flight is still in 3 stages, which makes it quite big. The fact that when i get rid of a stage the maneuvering gets better supports this.

To fix the problem, I added RCS which I didnt have prior(didnt know about this prior to your replies in this thread, so thank you).

Im not sure why this suddenly happened after the patch, but its not a problem now that I have discovered how RCS works

Thanks again everyone!

From your "schematic", I noticed you don't seem to have any reaction wheels installed beyond what's already in the command pod. If the command pod's reaction wheels have been nerfed as WafflesToo says, than that is probably enough to alter the spacecraft's ability to maneuver.

RCS can fix this, but RCS is dependent on a monoprop supply so once it's gone, that's it. I'd recommend a belt-and-suspenders approach: i.e. put an Inline Reaction Wheel module (.3 tons if I remember correctly) on your spacecraft, to help you maneuver without using RCS - great for both ascent and for when the monoprop finally runs out.

Just my thoughts - hope it helps.
