Start EVA with grabbed hands?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks,

is it only me or do your Kerbals also start their EVAs in free fall? From my observation, most times I start an EVA, the poor Jeb is stepping out the door and starts floating (even in atmosphere  ). But I feel that sometimes the EVA starts with that grab ...but only sometimes?

I'd like to have him open the hatch and GRAB that damn handle in each and every case, so he doesn't float off. What can I do?

Cheers,

-Z

Iv seen 2 things that cause the problem you mention.

1) Blocking the hatch with another part. This can cause your kerbal to be shot off into space as it trys its hardest not to share the same space as another object.

2) If your ship is under acceleration/deceleration from lets say atmospheric drag then the kerbal can get ripped from the ladder.

The best thing to do is a launch pad EVA to test that your hatch isnt blocked and is working.

Do you have the same problem with all capsules ?

Happens to me way too often in 0.23 with no obstacles and no acceleration. They just don't hold onto the ladder for whatever reason.

Try this: put Kerbal X (stock) on the launchpad and try going EVA with the crew. In two of three cases they slide down on the decoupler instead of holding the ladder.

Yup have this problem also, both in space and on launchpad/other planets. Around half of the time, even with the simplest crafts, Kerbals just disconnect from the craft as soon as they appear when going EVA. (playing stock game)

Yeah I was kind of wondering this my self. It also seems on my small space station the Kerbals will slide on the ladder as well, they are holding on but slipping down the bars. Once I move them it is fine though. I nearly lost one of them during the first EVA from the station due to him not grabbing the bar, and there is nothing on either side nor is there acceleration that I am aware of.

I noticed this too back in v22 but it seems worse in v23. Like you said, moving them seems to correct it, mostly (still get the occasional slider).

All, thanks for sharing ...so it seems there's no solution at hand :(

Well my solution was to learn how to use the EVA pack in a big hurry, or lose my Kerbal to a free fall. I have since "recovered" the Space station to make adjustments to it. Must go back and test again now.
