Now that I've actually watched the first video, I see what the main issue is: he's one of the "Old World" thinkers who went into it without any understanding of even the most fundamental components of orbital mechanics. He seriously believed that getting out of the atmosphere would somehow cause gravity to cease functioning. His lack of understanding of rocket design is actually pretty understandable; most people who look at those behemoths on the pad just see a big phallic tower that shoots fire out the bottom, and they never see what goes on once it's up high enough to start staging components.

Actually I'm pritty sure almost everyone here thought shooting a rocket straight up would end him up in orbit when they first try it

A lot of people do think that way, I know; I didn't, but I also was fairly educated about how orbits worked when I started out (in that I knew it involved gaining enough horizontal speed that you don't fall back to the ground below; I had no grasp of orbital mechanics beyond that). It just saddens me that the fundamental nature of how orbits worked, first deduced well over 250 years ago, is by and large unknown to the majority of the populace. That we so often put more stock in fiction to reflect reality than to actually learn how things work.

I think it's more of a matter of his not knowing how the game handles orbits. Lots of games nowadays are "casualized", where all the interesting and difficult things are taken away, controls are reduced to a button or two, and one can achieve modest scores by the simple act of scrubbing the keyboard/gamepad with your face.

Welp, he plays Starcraft mostly, where being in orbit, means being higher :P (also some maps are in space with standard surface physics :P) but that doesn't mean the game is bad or casual (quite the opposite). Personally I blame the lack of space knowledge on movie industry as it still sets the bar for other media like games. Watching Elysium (2013) gave me cancer  (mostly because it had so much contrast with super simple physics and the advanced realistic concept of "open" colony).

Kurt isn't terrible at the game, and he's getting better. Plus, he's a bit more relatable to the newbie than Scott Manley.

The Zisteonian Empire is overtaking Kurt Republic the space race quite badly, even thou it started from 0 only recently. Hes getting better quite slowly but that's part of his charm :P.
