Laythe Colonization Problem Department [LCPD] - Registration

Recommended Posts

January 2014: The President of the United States of Kerberica announces that you are announced the new Administrator for Space & Science [ASS]. Reports from scientists over the last couple of decades have shown an increase in temperatures and redhouse* gases and as such a worry has been gradually spreading throughout the globe. Luckily new reports show that at the current rate of growth (including births, deaths, third-world economy's etc.), Kerbin will survive for at least another 500 years. However, the time has come to explore other colonization-able planets - and Laythe seems to be one of your best options

Your Task

  • Send an unmanned rover to Laythe with communication devices
  • Establish a permanent living colony on Laythe (with at least 3 manned rovers, no size limit)
  • Rendezvous the rover with the base
  • Send 100 Kerbals to the base to start the colonization process

You can achieve this in any way but it must be done from scratch - as in, start a new sandbox profile.

Rules

  • You must start a NEW SANDBOX PROFILE
  • You must use ALL STOCK PARTS
  • NO MODS are allowed - any use of mods will disqualify you immediatly
  • You must use docking to dock together the pieces of the base
  • Each base must contain: at least 1 communication device per base part, at least room for 50 Kerbals and at least 3 manned rovers (small or big)

Achievements

A Second Kerbin - Land an unmanned rover on Laythe for 50 POINTS

Fly Me To The Moon - Send up the first part of the base for 50 POINTS

Can We Meet Up? - Rendezvous the unmanned rover with your base for 75 POINTS

Space Kiss - Dock together the first two pieces of the base for 100 POINTS

Three's A Crowd - Build a base made up of 3 parts for 150 POINTS

1/4 - Send 25 Kerbals to the base for 200 POINTS

Halfway There! - Send 50 Kerbals to the base for 300 POINTS

Mission Complete: Laythe Takeover - Send up 100 Kerbals to the base for 500 POINTS

You have until Tuesday 31st December 2013 23:59 to register - simply put your name down in a comment and "I agree to the rules of this challenge". Anyone registering after this date will not be counted. After this you need to post a screenshot of your rocket BEFORE the launch and AT the base/Laythe on the topic I will post on 1st January 2014. Every Sunday I will announce the standings at that time.

Good luck,

totalplane

PS, I thought of redhouse gases because Kerbals are green, so...

I'd like to give this a shot, and agree to the rules of the challenge.

  • You must use ALL STOCK PARTS
  • NO MODS are allowed - any use of mods will disqualify you immediatly

Just to verify -- I like using MechJeb's landing predictor tool to help me figure out where the heck atmospheric drag and planetary rotation are going to take me by the time that I get down. The rules forbid such use, correct?

I see a few issues... For one, 100 kerbals is a *lot* so I'd imagine that'd get pretty tedious. But hey, maybe some people want to do that, I just wouldn't.

The second issue is that for something that size (unless you're trying to reach Whackjovian levels) would require a lot of docking. One or two dockings would probably be fine, but docking such large components (and at frequency) would be hard even with mods. In stock, if your docking ports don't align on the ground, you're pretty much screwed. However, if mods that involve hinges were allowed, you'd have a lot more control over alignment.

I'm not trying to say your challenge is bad, it just could be executed a bit better. At the scale it's currently at, I think people will be reluctant to try it as it's quite a large commitment. But that's just my two cents.
