Add crew to your station while in flight?

Recommended Posts

hey i got this cool science station at the moon, i depart landers from there and get science from different biomes. but the thing is... all of my crew is gone only jeb and 2 others are in the main pod the ones in the science thing are missing and my hitchhiker container is also suddenly empty, i filled them up at launch and now they are all gone :( is there a way to spawn them in somehow like by the quicksave?

If you added crew in the VAB prior to launch, and left/re-entered the VAB for any reason, or left the VAB and launched directly from the pad, the lab and hitchhiker container will be empty. Neither of these parts are crewed automatically and they are reset to empty every time you load the ship.

The legit way to staff your ship is to send another mission. For cheating I'd pack up a few hitchhikers and use HyperEdit.

This issue also appears if you remained in the VAB after adding the crew but interacted with any part. Add a strut? Crew resets. Clicked a part on your ship? Crew resets (even if you put it back where it was or used ctrl-z to undo).

By default the game will completely fill the root part if it's a part that can contain kerbals. any other crew containing part is left empty. If your root part is not kerbal-containing then it seems a little less predictable, but the game will pick one of the kerbal-capable parts and fill that (its also where vessel control will default to when sending the ship to the pad)

I recommend adding the crew manifest mod which allows you to add kerbals while on the launch pad and move them around your vessel. Adding Kerbals on the pad is nice in the event you forget to setup your crew in the VAB. Because a docked ship is 'one' vessel it also allows you to move kerbals around without having to go EVA, which is how it should be for space stations.

It also means you can do station launches without having to send kebals up in the lab module.

I 'lost' Kerbals from my Mun lab, but I eventually figured out how. From the VAB, I manually filled all the slots with Kerbals and then proceeded to launch. I realised upon launch that I needed to make an adjustment so I reverted back to the VAB, added the missing part (can't remember what it was) and went to launch again. That was when I lost the Kerbals from the lab; you need to add the Kerbals again after reverting back to the assembly building. I don't think that applies when reverting back to the launch pad though. Maybe you lost them the same way I did?

Anyway, I eventually sent two additional landers to my ground based Mun lab to fill it up. I'm quite confident landing things on the Mun and Minimus now so it wasn't the end of the world.
