So after doing my KSP Trailer (See HERE) I randomly opened up GIMP (no im not buying photoshop) and made this:

Seeing as ive made so many of these, ive put them into this album on imgur.

I think the kerbal's outline is too sharp against the background, maybe you can blur it a bit to make him stand out less.

I've used Paint.Net. Never liked it. I prefer GIMP. I did look into Photoshop but it 1. Cost a lot (even for the essentials) 2. Just was not as flexible for me.
