Mk1-2 Pod exit

An easy workaround is add additional ladder rungs along side the built-in ones.

When you are in EVA climb down a few rungs and press shift-a. Your Kerbal will look to his left. Still holding shift-a press the spacebar and he should jump left. Press f to grab hold of the other rungs and you are good to go. You will have to time it right or he'll miss.

If you set up the ladders just right you can often coax the Kerbal to go sideways and transfer to the ladders you placed. But I'm with the OP on the desirability of a pod with ladders aligned with the rest of the parts. Even better: tweakable ladders! (I have no idea how you'd implement that).
