10 Km race to space!

Recommended Posts

This challenge is all about acceleration and speed.

The goal is to reach a 10 Km height in as little time as possible, of course this means that acceleration is a key factor.

Goals:

- Reach 10 Km height (requirement)

- Reach it in as little time (t) as possible (+ [1/(t*0,5)]*8000 points (=timepoints (y)) --> 10 seconds = 1600 points / 20 seconds = 800 points / etc.

Point over time distribution graph:

jnynAFB.png

- Bring n numbers of kerbals (+ [(n+1)/4]*y points) ---> @20 seconds: 0 kerbals = +200 points / 1 kerbal = + 400 points / 2 kerbals = +600 points / etc.

---> @10 seconds: 0 kerbals = +400 points/ 1 kerbal = + 800 points / 2 kerbals = +1200 points / etc.

These are the only 2 factors that determine point quantities.

Here is the simplified equation: x = (4000/t)*(5+n)

This means that you should develop your own strategy in order to achieve a maximum value of points (rather have less time or more kerbins?)

Rules:

- You must only use stock parts

- It is strictly forbidden to use any physics altering mods/cheats/cmds (a.k.a. is must be as the game appears on fresh install without f12)

- You are allowed to use mods such as mechjeb to calculate ÃŽâ€v, and other coordinates, but not for steering/autopilot/autostaging.

- You may choose any trajectory you like

- You can use rockets or airplanes

- A screenshot of the rocket is not required, since it would give away your design, but you may if you want.

- Since no vehicle screenshots are mandatory, we can only rely on your sincerity, so fly straight and with honour!

- In order to measure the time, press f3 as soon as you reach 10Km, heights under 10Km will not be accepted, any height over it will

(if you have a screenshot that displays 25 seconds at 9999 meters it will not quality, if you have 27 seconds at 11Km, it will count as 27 seconds)

This means that with increasing speeds (=decreasing time) not only your building skills, but also reflexes will be put to the test.

Here is an example of a valid screenshot: 23 seconds with 0 kerbals = 695 + 174 = 869 points

I will be keeping 3 leaderboards:

One for vehicles with 0 kerbals only, one for vehicles with kerbals, one combined.

Let the race begin!

2) Mr.Rocket - 4293p

3) SkyRender - 2307p

Cool, i'll try this once my game loads.

Not sure how your scoring system equation works, but i got 39 kerbals to 10km in 41 seconds :D

I thinks it's: 800 points for the 39 kerbals, + i don't know how to check my score.

Could you make the scoring system easier to understand please?

Your score is:

Time:

[1/(41*0,5)]*8000 = ca. 390

Kerbals:

[(39+1)/4]*390 = ca. 3900

So total = 4293 :D (calc. made with simplified equation, hence the 3 points of difference)

I divided the equation into 2 parts, in order to give an overview of the underlying mechanics, but here is a simplified version:

x = (4000/t)*(5+n)

Iìll add it to the original post now.

10 brave Kerbals decided to go to space today. They were in a hurry, you see.

And they got to space! And came back almost immediately because someone forgot to tell them that you have to go sideways at some point to get into orbit proper.

I think this is going to boil down to a parts limit race.

For instance, I can get 48 Kerbs to 10KM in ~30 seconds.

That gives me 7067 points and the current lead. However, all I did was stack 12 hitchhiker pods and then figured out the minimum fuel / mainsail combo to get to 10KM.

This cycle could be repeated to increase the number of passengers exponentially until your PC couldn't handle it.

I want to nominate Ninety-Three's ship "Plaid" as the benchmark. The altitude meter does not change fast enough to read the actual altitude, but it's visually clear from the curvature of the planet that the first screenshot was taken above 10km. Giving it the worst assumption possible, it was taken at {lim (1-t) ⇨ 0} seconds of mission time and carried no Kerbals, giving a score of at least 20,000.

With a cluster of seven stock short SRBs with Jeb being crushed by G forces;

Just a probe core with the same design.

I played with a 3.75m Griffin engine from a mod to only shave off one second.

Can't shave any more off with single stage to goal.

Interesting challenge, lets give it a bash:

First try: Maximum speed.

aK2q6UB.jpg

21 seconds to 10K, 4 kerbalnauts. = 1904 points (the image is for T=27 at 12700m, but it passed 10000 at 21 sec. Better image at t=27 though!. Not for entry into the challenge, but score would have been 1904 ?)

Nice, but the KerbalNaut association doesn't like me "setting their people on fire"

Ok, so no professional KerbalNauts.. If I got to use amateurs, I need to give a gentler ride. Preferrably with sofa, tv and microwave popcorn. Enter the Apartment

0HAXevN.jpg

39 seconds, but it seats 21. So score is... 2667

Hmm, thinks the malicious bureaucrat. If an Apartment is good, what about a City?

So he builds the biggest city of Apartments he can fit on the launchpad.

UeItl0F.jpg

Yes, That will do very well indeed! Pity about the budget, had to shave a few corners in construction.

Lets launch it!

cG8exmq.jpg

O0RDSkf.jpg

Maybe shaved a bit too much?

g42PI4J.jpg

Does this count? 54 seconds, and over 10000 m. Well, most of it, i think..

Budget redo approved, workmen hired. 192 reinforcing struts later, we launch again.

mGJC1AQ.jpg

There we go!

1841 KerbaulNauts (actually slum dwellers), at 10000 m in 38 seconds.

That's good for 194316 points, right?

:P w....wha? how?....

I never thought people would go this far :confused:

Who'll be the first user to break the million points mark? :rolleyes:

However I'll need you to post an f3 shot, and larger since it is barely possible to make out the time on your screenshots.

Ok, no problemo.

I don't have better pics of that launch, but I hear the Block organizers are hosting some sort of thing tonite?

At the end of the game, the fireworks heralds the Start of the Game. Play Ball!

As requested, your F3..

i wanted to include a picture of them parachuting back (you don't think I launch 1841 kerballos to their death each time!?!?),

But unfortunately I forgot to load batteries, and my parachute lights went out before the canopies correctly deployed.

Ah well, next time.
