How to go from polar to equitorial orbit?

Recommended Posts

Assuming you really need to change your orbit from polar to equatorial (which is mostly not the case), the best way is to burn at equator so the apoapsis appears on equator, and then raise it as high as possible within the SOI. Then perform inclination change at that apoapsis and back at periapsis lower the apoapsis again.

This maneuver is also called bielliptic inclination change.

You'll want to use the maneuvering node to change your orbital inclination using the pink up/down directional handles. What you'll find is that when you do this the ending orbit you get will start to tilt but it will also get much bigger. You'll then have to correct for this.

Honestly it requires a massive amount of fuel to make this change and if you're interested in doing it because you're in a polar orbit around, say, the Mun, you will likely find you'll run out of fuel before getting back to the equatorial orbit you want.

Well I have a probe round Duna and Im trying to get it home but I keep missing Kerbin so it because im stuck in polar orbit?

You may want to try maneuver node editor and try playing with parameters to get a tangential escape from Duna. No need to change planes. Just a bit of patience.

You also may escape from Duna, and then after SOI transition burn retrograde to encounter with Kerbin.
