Pudding Cup 5. The cutest giant VTOL you'll ever see!

Recommended Posts

Here is my latest creation.

It's Duna capable VTOL SSTO. Comes in at 310 tons, 772 parts. It's powered by 32 jets, 8 LVT30's and 4 Nervas.

I had JUST enough fuel for this mission! I've never completed a mission with this little fuel left.

Launch profile is fairly simple.

Spacebar to turn on the jets.

Fly straight up to around 15000m, then turn over to about 30-40 degrees and start building up speed like an airplane.

Once you're at about 27000m and going around 1700m/s turn on the rockets with action group 2.

Turn off the jets with action group 1 when the first ones flameout. Unlike plane designs this won't flip or spin with a flameout. There's a bit of a shake when they go..... but it doesn't become uncontrollable.

When you're close to completing your orbit, use action group 4 to disable the LVT-30's. Finish the orbit just with the nervas.

You should get to orbit with around 4.5 - 5k DV left on the nervas, although unless you're only going to minmus or Gilly you'll have to turn on the LVT30's for the landing on Duna or the Mun.

The T/W ratio is bad when you're just on the nervas. I used 5 burns of approximately 210 d/v to get to Duna.

It's got a drogue chute on the top, but TBH it's more of a liability than a help and randomly causes the crew capsule to fly off. I wouldn't recommend using it. Come in shallow, use the atmopshere to slow down to around 300m/s, turn the LVT-30's back on and then perform a powered landing. Action group 0 toggles the ladders.

When you get back to Kerbin, hopefully you've got some fuel left, because you've gotta do another powered landing. Landing just with the jets is really difficult, because they've got a delay between when you move the throttle. It took me a few attempts to time the suicide burn just right, but I managed it in the end.

Here is the craft.
