Would you?

a) If it's a long trip (>1/20th of lifetime expectancy): No. I'd make history with some friends... I recon I couldn't take everybody, but it doesn't make sense that I would have to go alone.

If it's a short trip (<1/20th of lifetime expectancy): Sure. I'd visit them from time to time, though, and keep in touch through long-range-space comms.

B) Wouldn't do that alone.

c) Definelty not. Wouldn't want to help imprison other people.

You know what ? Real slaves have all of it. Always. Slaves are expensive, so you give them food and protection, so that you won't have to buy another slave too soon. They also have work (really, trust me).

Having protection, food or even being paid does not make you a free man.

Ah, but a slave is only a slave because leaving results in the them being sought after for further use if not just killed on sight. A person on a space ship wouldn't have to worry about that, because leaving the ship is death, not by other people, but by the environment. You don't leave a spaceship, not because you are a prisoner, but because you literally can't leave, no matter how nice and luxurious the spaceship is, you just can't leave.

If that is slavery to you, than every one of your Kerbals, and every man whose ever been to space is a slave.

It raises the question of how big the craft has to be before the test-tube astronaut becomes a free person. Obviously creating an embryo to grow up on its own in a tin can in space, never to see another human is wrong, similarly if you only send two or three people, but if we send 50,000 people in a huge, self-contained biosphere, where there would be as many different jobs and career options as in a large town on earth, are they really any more "enslaved" then the people back home?
